Finally got me a truck!

I just picked up a 91 Toyota pickup deluxe short bed automatic with 170k. I believe the pervious owner never did any maintainces on it. I tried search up how to change the transmission oil but no luck finding it. Could anyone guide to me to it.i bought spark plug and wire for now. Let me know what else I need to change will be greatly appreticiate. Thanks folks

As far as other maintenance, check all your oils and fluids, diff fluid front and rear, change oil, check your coolant level, etc.

Thanks for the reply. I notice a lot of this DIY tranny post are mostly for 5 speed. Is there any differences in the filling. And my truck is 2wd not 4wd will I still have to worry bout diff oil change?

Manual transmission and differential oil changes are pretty obvious. There are drain plugs at low points and filler plugs partway up the sides. Drain plugs are magnetized to trap ferrous debris. Clean them off and look for signs of impending catastrophe.

I would be tempted to put in fresh conventional lubricants and run them a few thousand miles to flush things out. WalMart is a reasonable source for these since they only need to be "barely good enough" quality. Then drain, inspect and refill with synthetics.

With a used vehicle, unless you have proof in the form of service records you have to figure everything on the maintenance list is overdue. Just think how good you'll feel when it's all done!

If there has never been any maintenance i would get a new distributor cap and rotor to go along with the spark plugs and wires

Today the truck seems to act a little werid. When I attempt to make a complete stop the truck would start shaking and feel like its about to died. After I went home to pick up something I manage to try to start the truck but it wouldnt start after a few tries so I tried turning the key and stepping on the gas at the same time
And it fired up. Does anyone know what's the problem here?

you could have a major leak between the air box and the throttle body. you are going to want to check all of the vacuum lines (diagram is on underside of hood). what are your RPMs at idle? they should be about 700ish but some of these old toyota engines the RPMs can vary several hundred RPMs depending on the day (it is normal). To adjust idle there is a screw on the throttle body. it is on the face that is facing toward the front of the vehicle. now just because it is a new truck I would check all connections, check for engine codes and change oil.

no problem... if you do have a leak in the air hoses I would recommend that you do the ISR mod. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/classi...mod-3-0-a.html
I would vent the valve cover/crankcase directly into the air though using a small air filter. (I can should you pictures tomorrow if you would like). I would recommend getting pipe bent for this but you don't have to. you can use intake pipe from any auto parts store.

Here is a nice write up for Auto transmission flush/exchange as well as a filter change. It is for the a340f so the part numbers and volumes may be different with the a340h if that is what you have. However, the general procedure should be just about the same. Good luck.

I'd look at the coolant mine looked good and clean looking in the cap. but when i flushed mine there was alot of ick you don't see.

Just so we know it would help if you told us what engine you have. Im assuming it is a 22re. Im also sorry I never got around to taking pictures. I keep forgetting and my dad currently has my car or i would go take pictures.

hmm... 91 automatic...
Which one? A43D, A340... ????

Seriously though, not hard to service the fluid. Loosen bolts so the fluid drains down at one end. Fluid done: drop the pan and change the filter, clean the pan and new gasket material. Bolt it up, fill the trans, start the engine and fill the trans again and again.... with the right fluid.
