Finally got my sliders on. Kind of ironic though... for as great a job as Jason DeMello did making the sliders, my welder did an equally awful job putting them on. They sit right against the rocker panel/pinch weld in a couple of places which rattles on the cab terribly. Plus, I know this is going to give rust a foothold in my rig (that really pisses me off because I've worked so hard to keep my rig rust free).

Just read your write-up too on them.

Other than having the welder break his welds and re-do it, can you trim your pinch weld?
By looking at that one closeup, it looks different than the pinch weld on my 2nd gen.
Mine is just a thin piece that the welders plasma torch cut off in about 3 seconds.

Can you "carve" yours out easily enough, or will it be a pain?

I also found out mine chipped very easlily the first time out with them, hence me putting on the clear guard stuff on the small tubes in between the main bars.
I did not want rust getting ahold on them, as the chips rusted after just a few days being exposed.

Also putting the 3M sand paper tape on top of them will protect them even more from rocks flying up and nicking them.

Good luck on how you go about fixing them, and fill us in on how you attack it.
They really do look sharp.

 

Looking good JT. That sucks about the weld job though. I am not sure I would want them re-welded to the same area though. Jeffs idea about smashing them on some rocks to ben the pinch weld up 1/4" sounds good.

 

I have read that before several times about smashing them down so to speak to make the pinch weld move up.

[anal mod on] Being the anal a hole that I am, it's not something I would consider on a rig I take pride in.

Though that method will work, it's going to scrape the upper part of the sliders where it will be hard to apply paint, and also on the pinch weld too.

Both of those places will soon rust.
We don't rust here in WA. state very easily, but I witnessed first hand my sliders rusting where they got nicked only a few days after our Greenwater trip.

We had a full day of rain the next day on Sunday, plus I washed the rig on Wednesday of last week, which made those nicks rust more.
It's amazing how bare metal like that will rust fast.
That is why I thought about trimming your pinch weld somehow, then touching it up with paint before your sheet metal would get a chance to rust.

If this was on a dedicated trail rig, then hell yeah, smash 'em down, and paint bomb the rust area after it grows. [/anal mode off]
