71 is egr. its clogged. if you are in a SMOG area, you wont pass because you will be putting out too much NOx. i cleaned my egr out,l but i dont have the equipment to test it, i only have one more free smog test.

First of all you should search because there are a thousand threads about this topic try "code 71". anyway...
It is most likely just the EGR temp sensor you can fool the ECU by putting a 10k resistor in the connector across the terminals. I would also recommend cleaning the EGR valve and the filter in the EGR vacuum modulator.
Click on the link in my sig and you can see my egr removal write-up. In there you will see a pic of the resistor installed.

I had a code 71 when i first bought my truck, ended up just being a vacuum line blown off my egr modulator, just take a look at your vacuum routing diagram under your hood and make sure your lines are routed correctly. Then go from there.

alright will do thanks. i think i am going to try and blow it out with some carb cleaner and compressed air. I think i will also use the vacuum pump to hold the valve open to get some of cleaner inside of it.

The black part on the 3.0's that have the leters q, p, and r on it. Its up front near the timing belt cover, near the spark plugs! In that area, where all the vacuum lines go in.
There is a little filter in there and i belive it connects to the egr

buy a new one. They are tiny maybe the size of an old half dollar.
Besides, if it is dirty as mine, blowing air isn't going to do anything.
Honestly, i don't think that is the problem though
