To do or not do CV axle

I'm planning a road trip after the weekend and my CV axle needs replacing. Is this something that could potentially cause me a roadside problem, perhaps with steering? I feel like I'm asking a stupid question because I don't have a lot of knowledge on CV systems. I won't be engaging 4 wheel drive at all.

I would rather do the work when I get to my destination because of a bunch of reasons. But I don't want to take any chances.

Would be EXTREMELY unlikely to cause any problems. If you have manual locking hubs, the chances are zero, with ADD they're very slight.

Your truck has a full-floating front end, so you can totally remove the CV and still drive the truck like normal (you can't do that on the 1995.5 and newer rigs) if you had to.

What about it do you need to replace it for?

Throw some grease in it and SAS it when you can

x2

If the front has manual hubs, the CVs shouldn't move at all, and you should be safe. If you have an ADD front diff, then the CVs will spin the whole time (and it will wear more).

if your hubs are manually locked, you're fine for as long as you need to get it fixed, as long as you don't engage the hubs.

Thanks!!! I don't have locking hubs but I'm going to let it go until I get there. for 100 bucks (after core return) it's definately worth doing but it's good to know I can wait and do the job over a few beers with my bro's...and go on that date this weekend (instead of getting greasy).
