Craigslist 4runner
New to the forum and I need some help to see if this 4runner is over priced or just not a good buy regardless. It seems pretty good to me but the milage is pretty high. I want to get a 1st gen 4runner and want to know if this is a good start for a reliable daily, when Im not riding my motorcycle.

was also looking at this one but its a hike (in NY) for me to get

Both those might be worth a up close and in person look.
Problems the sellers are unaware of are common at times
I like how neither add showed the parts I would look at first the engine compartment and several shots of the frame.
Know going in there are always going to be areas of neglected maintenance that need brought up to speed .Most often around $1000.00 in parts
Can you do most of your own work ?? Paying Labor on a older vehicle gets expensive.
Just what kind of daily driving would this be looking at ??
I liked my 22re but a high speed interstate commute where traffic is moving at 75mph is not something I would like

Thanks for the reply Wyoming9,
I can do some of the servicing myself, my biggest set back is that while I do have off street parking to leave my truck there for a bit while I work on it, I dont have a covered garage. So pulling the motor would be a large undertaking.
I mainly do the work on my cars and motorcycles myself if at all possible. I have done timing chains and guides on my 79 yamaha xs650. Shocks, ball joints, brakes, things like that I can tackle in the weekends with parts stores pretty close to me.
From my research it seems that the frames usually rust out before the engine or trans goes on these trucks. I guess my bigger question is that is 3800 for a unmodified (which is what I prefer) 4runner with 271k miles on it reasonable or stretch.
Thanks for the replies fellas

The one in my avatar is nicer than the two you linked to and I paid $3000 for it. A guy near my mother sold one nicer than mine last week for $2800. But keep in mind, prices are very region dependent. My truck could very well have sold for much more in a different area.

Thanks offroadnutz, so it kinda sounds like they may be a tad over priced. After weeks of the same ads it seems like another just popped up!
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/d...621583989.html (northern Virginia)
but he only has had it 4 months and is turning it over, seems pretty good on the outside and says the frame is clean, but knows nothing about the motor ever being worked on.
Maybe ill just keep waiting for the right one to show up
Thanks fellas!

$3800 is not too much for that white one! Just because someone in TX (little rust) paid less doesn't mean they are common in that condition in VA or MD. I think the white one looks good but the fact that it's been posted for 18 days and he says it's yellow makes me think it might be a typical Craigslist scam. If you are interested you'd better contact him quickly. Be skeptical and go over it with a fine tooth comb. Be sure and check the undercarriage for rust.
The one in NY is nothing special. I like blue better but it looks a little wonky and looks like there might be some rust underneath. I'm sure you can find one in VA or MD in better shape. All that pops up here locally are 3.0 automatics though.

first one is 30 years old and has enough mileage to have been to the moon.
limited info provided doesn't really give enough info
fresh top end head gaskets tune up timing chain cover and timing chain sliders and tensioner brand new $130 Interstate Battery" i always wonder why people dump a vehicle after dumping some cash into them.
The NY 4Runner has a lot of cancer around the wheel wells. When I first moved back from NY i dumped both my trucks because of the salt
The 89 looks like your best bet based on the limited info provided by the 3 ads.
keep in mind any used vehicle is going to have issues, especially when they are all pushing 300K on the clock

If it was not for rusted out Toyota`s I would have nothing to keep me out of trouble.
It is much worse now with the liquid brine not only frames but the brake and fuel lines as well.
To bad the OP is not looking for a project I have two 4Runners 86/87 not sure without looking I would make a super deal .
Not having a place to work makes it hard

For those keeping track with this post, another one just popped up, it looks much rougher but the milage is far lower for a lower price. With some body work and a paint job I think it would look pretty good. Somewhat hard to tell the frame condition because it seems like its wet.

wyoming9, what kind of project are you talking about? I dont mind putting in work but if it would be months before it would be road worthy then it most likely will have to wait till I get a garage.

The price on the first 2 looks a little high to me. The first one looks a little cleaner but it's hard to say with out seeing it in person. Check the axle codes as well especially if you plan on running 30+ inch tires. This can save you time and money.

Did you call about the white one in MD? IMO the latest one is far too rusty.

Who wouldn't pay that for a salvaged automatic?
