Exclamation chevy 350 swap into and 89 toyota pickup

me and my mech decided to do a small block chevy swap with a turbo 350 tranny

because the conversion with the stock tranny cost to much

the thing that he said though is that the NP205 transfercase wont fit between the frame rails of my 89 toyota pickupshort bed single cab.

he said that i would have to use a trasfer case out of an S10 4x4

is he correct.

i think there is an adapter available so you can use the stock toyota transfer case, but i'm not sure.

And make sure you make a buildup thread for those of us considering this swap.

It's an auto, and a stock 350, it can handle the power.
Now, if you want a manual, with some decent bolt-on's, you might want to upgrade that rear end.

np205

I have done some measuring under my 94 regular cab. I've got the bare small block chevy mounted under the hood as a test fit. I'm planning to put in the granny gear 4 speed with a np205. My 205 will fit between the frame rails fine, but my sm465 trans is probably much shorter than the auto. Off the top of my head the bellhousing is 8 1/2" deep, trans is 12" long bellhousing flange to transfer case flange. The transfer cases should be the same size. Crossmember must be modified and custom driveshafts. My clutch linkeage may be interesting. I expect to destroy both ends on the first test drive! If I'm prepared I won't be dissappointed.

I don't think the front torsion bars will support the extra weight of a 350 + TH350, will they?

What was the original engine?

There must be a million of these ifs trucks runnin around with v8 swaps
I am yet to see any broken torsion bars??

NP205 is actually a pretty small case and as stated before you should have no issues with using it

I would be concerned about sag more than breakage. Also, you may need to upgrade the shocks to control the extra weight.

When I was building mine up, I almost went with the buick aluminum v6, but stayed with the 22re simply because I didn't want to mess with all the adapters needed to fit the thing.

I don't know... Is your truck fine when you ride with a passenger?

The engine and tranny won't weigh more than an adult male so I'm sure it's fine to do.

What's next, are you going to say the stock brakes can't handle a V8 either?

Lot's of funny ideas around here...

Back OT, Advanced Adapters makes an adapter to go from a th350 to the stock transfer case. Supposedly the stock tcases are fine with the extra power if driven sensibly. All you have to do is get a special longer shaft installed in the tranny for it to work. The TH350 need not be out of a 4 wheel drive truck either.

By using the adapter your stock speedometer will still work, and you should be able to use your stock driveshafts without modification too.

Check out Downey for more info...

Talking np205

Weight is alot more of an issue than size. NP205 is a cast iron basturd.
Guessing it will be OK but I'll never know till I try it.

NP205 Is not that big and does not weight that much compare to other cast-iron cases --- it is also smaller due to it being gear drive -- NP203 on the other hand would max your payload limits

The 22RE with a 340H and transfer case weights in around 500lbs. A 350SB by itself weights about 450lbs (iron block and heads).

Floorpan clearance

I have my bare block mounted under the hood as a test fit. I must lift the body a couple inches to fit the bellhousing and sm465 tranny. I tried to mount it to the block last night, but the bottom of the floorpan is in the way. I'm sure a 2" body lift will fix this clearance issue. Also as I was warned before, My shifter is going to come up through just under the edge of the dashboard if I don't do some bending on the handle. Not sure if I can bend it enough without cutting the dash! Really don't want to. NP205 Transfer case looks like it will fit fine soi far

sbc and np205

Here's some pics of my swap. Plenty of room for everything. Can't lift the tcase myself or it would've been up there in the pics. 3" body lift is a MUST for me with the manual tranny. Oil pan cleared the front diff with 1/4 inch to spare. Don't know if it will flex enough to rub later or not.

Any updates on the swap? What are you using for drive lines? Chev adapted to yota or yota adapted to chev? How are you adapting them?
