Cheap Muffler setup

Needed a new muffler and tail pipe. Didn't want to drop $130 for a stocker. Started exploring. Found an aluminized Thrush muffler at Advance Auto Parts with 2 1/4 in/outs. took the sawzall out and hacked off the big round stocker right next to it as the Thrush was a couple inches shorter. I also bought a 2 1/8 ID to 2 1/8 ID coupler. this went over the remaining inlet from teh stock muffler. then the new Muffler slipped very snugly over this. Clamped it down good. Tried to use the flexible muffler tube but didn't want to spend all day trying to get it hung and routed. So I went to a muffler shop and got 2 1/4 aluminized tail pipe built and welded on (and they put the hangers on the muffler. Total cost

Thrush Muffler $20
Clamp $2
Coupler $2
Custom Tailpipe $35

$59 Total.

Good sound and flow but not too loud. We'll see how it stands up to time. My last 4Runner I had put a Dynomax Super Turbo. Great Performance but it got too loud there towards the end. They are both made by Walker as well. I could have bought the Super Turbo for $40. Advance Auto Parts was teh only place in town that stocked mufflers. Of course they only had 4 to pick from

sweet. i spent 150 bucks for a muffler and a tailpipe that didnt fit, (catback system)

I recommend you get it welded at an exhaust shop for about $20, those clamps won't last IMO.

Sweet deal! I spent about $200 (including welding) for a Flowmaster 50-series SUV, Catco High Flow cat, and 2.5" piping. Got it welded at a shop after I did the routing myself, cost about $40 IIRC.

the only place i had to use the clamp was between the cat and muffler. Fortunately the coupler fit so tight on the pipe that I had to lightly pound it on. then the muffler fit super tight too. no pounding but i did have to twist it as i pushed on it.

One reason I didn't want to spend a boatload is I don't know what the engine is going to do. I need to check compression. It runs good for it's age but if it is going to crap out I may do the 3.4 or Lexus V8 conversion. In that case, most definitely will need some custom exhaust
