The cause of my clutch chatter. pic inside
Ever since I bought this truck I've had a clutch chatter problem. I replaced the carrier bearing, but also at the same time I had Zuk rework my diff's with gears and lockers. I just chalked it up to the combination of carrier bearing and the locker. Was I mistaken.
In the pic you can see the two cracks below the spring that is out. The guy I bought it from claimed it had a Marlin clutch. Marlins clutch is on the right. Big difference.
I guess the final straw was when the spring retainer finally broke.
After the installation of the new setup, all the chatter is gone and shifts grreat.
When I put it all back together and started her up and put her into gear, nothing happened, she didn't move. I thought for sure the trans was gone as well, but wait. Ahhhhhhh, I am such a dumb a.. I forgot to hook up the drive shaft.

I say chatter. there was no noise. it felt like the clutch would skip on top of the flywheel causing a jerking motion. i guess because it was cracked it was flexing, and not stay flat. like the aussie locker does in a very low speed turn.

When I did my locker, I tied the DS up out of the way with nylon rope. I installed diff and went for a drive. It was quiet and all was good until a couple miles away from my house then there was a loud pop, then a strumming sound coming from the rear of the truck. I was pretty frustrated because I thought I'd not put the diff together properly. Babied it home put the truck back up on the jack stands and was about to take the wheels off to remove the diff when I noticed the frayed end of a nylon rope hanging from the driveshaft. it has been content to spin over the driveshaft until it heated up enough to melt a bit, grab the DS and break (loud pop) then the frayed end was smacking the gas tank skid (strumming noise).

When I had my engine rebuilt the mechanic mentioned about the clutch that it had plenty of material left but the springs were a bit loose in their seats and that I'd risk them popping out at some point in the future. Also mentioned that there were tiny burn marks on the pressure plate, but he resurfaced it. I'm guessing this is the same issue discussed here. Of course I didn't have the loot for the new equipment so he isntalled the old friction plate back in and i have the strange "chatter".
Looking back I should have sucked it up and replaced the damn plate while the rig was apart, would definately have saved me some loot when I go to do this in the near future.

my clutch had uneven wear, the inside was worn more then the outside also the piolt bearing was gonna go so out with the old and in with the new. My fix is coming in the mail, 1200 lb clutch from marlin.
