Awful noise from the A/C...
92 PU with 3.0
This is all post new reman engine and recharge of A/C.
Now I am getting a horrible noise when I turn on the A/C (about 95% of the time). It sounds somewhere between a howl and a grind, and no, there isn't a live cat caught in the belt, tho it sounds like it. Belt doesn't seem loose.
Thus I am thinking this is either the clutch or a bad bearing in the compressor, and likely heading, alas, to a replacement compressor? Any thoughts/tips?
Thanks!

1) OK, OK, I searched more and found some useful threads
2) In an effort to make this a useful thread will include those links and detail progress, etc:
Compressor, clutch, and how to tell if seized, etc:

Belts, idler arms, tensioners:

So when A/C off, all spins fine. When A/C on, initially no noise and everything spinning fine. Then (sooner or later) noise starts up, and I can see the A/C pulley slows down/almost stops intermittently, with the belt stuttering over it (=the noise). This must mean the compressor is trying to seize up, right? Don't see any way this can be a "too tight" belt, etc.
So if I replace the compressor, would you all agree with oft-staed sentiment that this is time to covert to R12? And if so, is this an easy R12 conversion or a hard on (i.e. all new o-rings, accumulator, etc?)

I have something similar happening in my 96. Used engine, new evap but if I am sitting at a stop I'll hear a terrible moaning sounds and one of the lines on the AC will vibrate. Only happens while sitting, never while driving.

"On further exam:"
1) Belt seems to have correct tension, i.e. about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of play
2) Tightening or loosening idler arm has little effect. Seems however that squeal pretty much won't initially happen at idle, only once I've stepped on the gas
Thus would appear compressor is heading toward lock up. Too bad, since still blows cold when not screaming...

Careful with the junkyard compressors, if they weren't sealed up and stored properly they'll be contaminated with moisture and you'll be wasting your time putting it on.

I agree re being choosy with the compressor. I am gonna get one
from ACKits. I think at same time will convert to 134. Anybody know how much you really need to swap out when doing this? I.e. collector alone or hoses + o-rings? I know it varies by engine.
