After 6 years of hard driving my headgasket gave up on Saturday. I had some cooling system issues about a month ago, but replaced the radiator, all of the hoses, and installed another Taurus fan.

After a brief stop the engine started running really rough, so I limped the last mile home. Once I stopped I noticed coolant coming from the exhaust flange right before the cat...luckily there is no coolant in the oil.

I know there are a ton of HG stories on this board.....what have you paid to have it done? And what did it include?

idk if they sell them..but i would recomend ATTARCO heads..and do it yourself..its ALOT cheaper..our head for our 22R was less than $250 shipped to our door..and everything was there..all was and still is well..

Not sure what it would cost for the 3.0, but this is what I did to save on some labor on my 22RE.

I went ahead and tore it down, labeled everything, bagged everything. I did as much prep work to everything as I could, ordered all the parts I wanted and then when it was ready to get buttoned up, I towed it down to the mechanic.

Took it down in the morning, had it back in the evening. 350.00 plus what I ordered.

technically you could do the HG job on the 3.0 for the price of the gaskets alone ($100 or so) but that wouldn't be the wisest move. while the top end and front of the motor is all torn apart, it is HIGHLY recommended to:
-deck and pressure test the heads
-do a valve job
-replace head bolts
-clean/test the fuel injectors
-replace ALL coolant and vacuum hoses
-replace timing belt/pulleys/tensioner/water pump/thermostat if they haven't been done in the past 12k miles
-all timing components if they haven't been done in the past 6k miles

I guess it all depends on what your intent is with your vehicle. if you want to keep it, definitely do all of the work listed above. you'll be spending about $750 +/-, more if you need to buy additional tools.

The only HG experience I have with with a 22R, so that's no help.

i knew there was a reason i had not added up all the reciepts, it runs great, definite power gain, sounds good too, but the GPM are still about 17-18 on highway if I drive it conservatively. which doesnt happen often. but the way i saw it, w/ the headers i eliminate any future HG issues (with proper maintenance ofcourse).

Now, ive come across a possible 91 4runner. for obvious reason i will not be going this route again... TacoClimber suggested a 3.4 swap, can any of the people that have done a swap, make some kind of list, sort of like mine? or point me in the right direction? ive tried reading a few of the swap threads but.....

The 2 choices I have come up with are---

having a Toy master tech replace headgaskets and have heads resurfaced for $1400 parts and labor. I had the timing belt, thermostat, and water pump done about 25k ago.

Rock auto offers Long blocks, and they use Marshall engines, and they do good work, and Rock Auto are good people. On that, if you are considering a new engine, look into some JDM engines, i'm sure there are everywhere. On that, the 3vze's are everywhere, and for cheap to.
