'92 Tacoma Info Needed.
Hi there!
I just bought a '92 Tachoma X-cab 4cyl 5spd 4x4 that I think is in need of a timing chain.
I haven't had time to really look into it to see if the chain is indeed snapped or if it's something else simple or not, but my question is the 4 banger in there a zero clearance engine or not?
How do I tell which engine it has? They could probably come with more then one 4 banger am I right?
Want to make a cheap lil mud buggy with it.
Thanks!

pull the valve cover, and see if the chain is snapped or what. also take a look at the guides , and the underside of the valve cover for wear marks.
If the chain did go then you probably have some valve damage. At that mileage its probably worth rebuilding the whole engine, or just getting a rebuild one.

if you did bend the valves, you may not need a new head. But if the cain is snapped, the first the you need to do is take the head to a machine shop and have them take a look at it.
I busted a timing chain a little while ago, but I got lucky and didn't bend the valves. If they are bent talk to Ted at www.engnbldr.com and he'll hook you up with new ones.
As far as which engine: it's written on the engine ID plate on the firewall. But if it's a 4x4 and 4cyl, I garuntee it's a 22RE.

It also depends on how the chain broke in the first place. Most of the time it will need new valves since they usually break while driving down the highway at 70 mph or something. But, I did take a donor motor apart that had a timing chain that broke on start up and the valves never came into contact with the pistons.
That isn't typical though. Either way, I would fix it. Even if you have to buy a whole new head. I seem to remember seeing a price of $380 complete someplace. It may have been engnbldr.com but I'm not sure. Either way Ted there can hook you up.

He does indeed. I've ordered from him a few times, and his shipping rates are pretty reasonable.
The last 3 orders I got from him only took a week to get to my door, I've got one sitting in customs right now though...dammit...order from Ted.
