Well i was wrong thinking that i had a harness made by Hoppy. I found my install instructions last night and it was actually made by SurePull item #881124.

Upon searching the internet (for the harness) it appears that SurePull which was owned by Dana, sold their facility along with a couple others to a buyout firm called the Riverside Company which owns just about every trailer part making company there is...

None of them seem carry or sell the same plug-n-play harness that i bought.

But i have good news, a company called CURT Manufacturing is producing them and can be found at Summit Racing (who woulda thought?)

Bumpin, they did a hack job on yours too? I'm assuming mine was a UHaul installation as well; their box thing is stuck inside one of my framerails, and I have what seems like a few feet of pig tail wrapped around the bumper...the little connector does light up at night though.

I got mine from Walmart about 10 years ago and it plugged into the right, and left tail light. It has 'Y' plugs for each light. Unplug from the light, plug harness in, plug original plug into harness and that's it.

They almost have to plug into the right and left lights to get both turn signals. There are only 2 hot wires on each light.

And when I bought it it was about $45. And its worth every penny too. Those crimp on wire taps will ALWAYS fail after a period of time. I can't believe they still make them.

oh i hope no one buys those curt harnesses heh. They say the 87-91 4runners are the same.....i dont think so lol. They changed plug design in 90, then again in mid-92. The 84-89 4Runner and 84-95 pickup use the same plugs.

Notice it says: 92-95 (w/ 31.5" TIRES). Their harness probably has a universal plug design. Why would Summit sell their product if it didn't work?
Also how do you explain '90 tail lights plugging into a '92 4runner? I've done it before.

lemme try this again.

87-91 4Runners is WRONG. Those run 84-89. They then switched plug designs in 1990. The plug design again changed in mid 1992. SO, it is possible for a 1990 harness to work on a 1992, as long as it was made before May (IIRC) of 1992 when they switched plug designs.

And if it is universal, they should state so, because then it is not said "T-Connector" that requires no cutting or splicing.

Also, all mid-92 to 95 4runners have the same harness, regardless of 31" tire or not. The only reason they may have included that was because the 31" tire option included to towing package.

Yeah, i understand what your saying. But when i said universal i meant a universal type of plug. Depending on how much the OEM plugs changed, it could be possible? When i get a chance, i'll call them (Curt mfg) and see what they have to say.

well if they mean universal, then I think they are just talking about a cut a splice type wiring. In that case, it will fit ANY toyota since all you would have to do is cut into the harness.

I'm posting on this since it is the closest to what I am looking for.

My 1992 4runner has what appears to be the factory towing package.

Unfortunately when I tested the wiring the lights didn't all work. only one light worked. I tested the trailer on a different vehicle and the trailer works.

The wires disappear into the passenger side quarter panel through a rubber grommet.

Where do they go from there?

I removed the tail light but they didn't terminate there.

I read about this converter box but I didn't see anybody post a location.

Should I be pulling out the interior panels?

i bought an adapter from advance auto for vehicles w/ separate tail and turn lights. the 4runners have a single filament turn bulb and a dual filament brake and running bulb. they had a kit for toyota trucks, but the plug has 6 pins, not the 4 that my 4runner has. the missing two are probably for the reverse lights, which are a part of the tailgate in 4runners. so i'm faced with taping into the body harness

my plan is to tap the driver turn signal and pull a wire to the pass side where i'll pick up the pass turn, brake, and running lights. i'll then route the wires through the unused grommet under the quarter panel

nothing is ever a simple plug-n-play
