There is nothing wrong with using water in the carb, I've even used atf. your not dumping it in your just pouring fast enough that it doesn't die. When the water hits the cylinder and the fuel ignites the steam and pressure clean the head and valves. The same way a lightly leaking head gasket will.
When you pour ATF down the intake, warn your neighbors. You'll be fogging up the entire neighborhood when it burns up.

doing hot valve lash adjustments suck i wish they were more like hondas and meant to be done cold.
if you EVER hear a "quiet" 22re i would be very weary of the person selling it. reason is that i have heard a quiet one that on inspection there was no valve lash (spacing) in there at all. they were claiming that it was recently rebuilt. ha, no joke.
