I just bought this truck, its an 87 4runner sr5 with a 22re. It runns great. its got 6k on the motor, however i think it has started ticking. Seems like its coming from the back top of the motor. The trucks been sitting for 4 years. The PO drove about 50 miles on it with the old oil, i have since change the oil, and have driven it about 160 miles, now there is a ticking. i havent had time to look at it yet, but im new to this motor (im used to the 3vze) i have the toyota book, so this weekend ill see what i can find. just looking for ideas or thing to look for.

Well mine has always had a tick tick..

 

it could have always been there. and i just havent noticed it before. ive only had the truck for about 160 miles. tomorrow im going a 240 mile trip..well see how that goes.

 

adjust your valve lash to .008 intake and .012 exhaust. do it when the engine is hot. That should quiet the motor down some. If the ticking persists then it could be your injectors ticking. Don't worry about the injectors mine tick as well.

 

what does injector ticking mean? like fuel injector? like i said, im not familiar with this motor yet.

 

yup fuel injector. They can be a little noisy on these motors but not a big deal.

probably noisy valves or injectors, no big deal, every 22re I've ever had has been noisy

I had mine since 1996 with less than 8k on my 1994 Truck when I bought it..It had a tick even then when practically new. I asked the mechanic at Toyota what the deal was...He smiled and said welcome to the 22RE its just a noise engine in general..Nothing to worry about..294k later its still ticking and ticking and ticking..I kinda think of it as the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang of Toyota..

 

The 22re is that kinda of motor that is never really ever quiet.... is the sound a "tick tick tick" thats prolly injectors and nothing at all to worry about.... is the sound a "tap tap tap" or a "clack clack clack" then its valves and also nothin to worry about but can be helped by adjusting them. But an old 22r is usually never quiet and is natural.

 

I would start off, with a suck in of Seafoam treatment.

I got one that may help you with a mpg or 2; do the Seafoam trick; warm up the 4rnr, pull off the vaccuum brake line, slowly suck in 6 oz. of seafoam. Just fast enough to bog it down, but DON'T KILL THE ENGINE, THAT IS A BAD THING!
once the 6 oz is gone, immdediately jump over and turn off the key, or have someone sitting there, to do it for you. Then wait at least 15 min, 30 would be better. Then go out, and restart your truck, with the vac hose, at least a bit back on, it does not need to go on all the way. What will happen next, will amaze and scare the hell out of you; black, grey, and white smoke will begin to billow out of your tailpipe, water and goo may flow out of your tail pipe, and sit in it and rev it, up and down , up and down, and hold on 3500 rpms, for about 10 seconds at a time. Make sure you do this, when no one else is at home, or your neighbors; they are going to think you are setting the neighborhood on fire!!!!
After about 10 minutes of this, it will start to blow out a bit clear. Turn off
the engine. pull vaccuum hose off again.
Repeat the above treatment steps with another 6 oz, then add the remaining 6 oz to your gas tank, have at least 7 gals of gas in there, when you do this.
what you will notice after doing this, is quick A!@#$ss response on the throttle, and some peppiness, and some serious idle smootheness will settle in.
I do the Seafoam to all my vehicles. You may even have to turn down your big Idle screw a bit, your engine will suddenly be seeming to idle higher...

'zackly. The way I think it works is; it has a very small molecular structure, gets inside , through, around , under , over etc., all the gunk and crud. completely dries it up, until it starts cracking like a riverbank in Africa. It also absorbs moisture, particularly water, and carries moisture with it, out through the exhaust , through the Catlytic, out the tail pipe. So when you crank it up, all the dried out particles get burnt up and pushed out the exhaust; sometimes if the chunks remain big, they can get stuck in your Cat; that is why you do another treatment right after-most of the time this doesn't happen though, and the stuff helps clean out the Cat as well, and remove moisture from it.
that is why sometimes you get goo coming out your tailpipe.
First time I did it to my 4rnr, goo and moisture came out mine.
I love the stuff, and if I didn't think it was harmful, I'd swig some of it...

yea...I need to adjust my valves most likely, I did it on my 86 22re and they loosened right back up pretty quickly though. That engine was for solid for 22K more miles until at 224k the timing chain chewed up the cover and it blew a headgasket I think

 

There is nothing wrong with using water in the carb, I've even used atf. your not dumping it in your just pouring fast enough that it doesn't die. When the water hits the cylinder and the fuel ignites the steam and pressure clean the head and valves. The same way a lightly leaking head gasket will.
