22RE Exhaust Leak @ Down Pipe Fixed

After having the engine pulled for a new head gasket and front end. I had about 500 miles on my 1994 22re and that's when I noticed an exhaust leak and a reduction in gas mileage. The exhaust was leaking at the connection between the exhaust manifold and down pipe. After a quick look under the truck I found what was causing the problem.
One of the studs and nuts went AWOL.

Alright got the new stud in....[sorry poor quality photo.]

Bought three new bolts for the studs at the local Toyota dealership. They were $1.78 each.

Exhaust leak is fixed. Here's a photo of the new stud and nut I installed.
I will recheck and tighten as needed after I drive it around a little bit.

There are two. If it's leaking there like mine, you'll be able to feel the exhaust with your hand. JUST BE CAREFUL AND DON'T BURN YOUR HAND! Here's the Toyota Part and photo. Good Luck.

Do those just sandwich on top of each other or is one for the manifold-to-downpipe and another for downpipe-to-cat? I ask because I'm not sure how stock the previous owner left my exhaust.

And I'm not sure if the exhaust tick I have is at the manifold-to-head or at the same place yours is. I'll have to disconnect the fan and use a candle or something... I'd be surprised if I felt it by hand, but I guess you never know until you try

On mine there are two pipes that "Y" into the down pipe so I need 2 gaskets there. Yours might be different though?

I had a pretty big leak so it was pretty evident when I reached down there and felt air blowing out where the stud and nut were missing, so I didn't need to do any additional detective work.

Good Luck!

I can better see what you're talking about now, I'm sure I have the same setup I just need to take a look. Thanks for the gasket and nut pics, helpful!

The problem I have had in the past is the studs will keep coming back out. I even tried new studs from Toyota and different types of metal fillers like JB Weld but the exhaust gets so hot it will melt it back out. I seen a suggestion somewhere about when that happens to try a helicoil. When I run into that problem again, I am going to try the helicoil and see what that does for the stud to stay into the manifold.

The two pipes stick thru the flange and one gasket does go over each pipe end. Another thing I do to keep from breaking the seal on the manifold and the gaskets is I cut the pipe past the "Y" where it goes to a single pipe and then run it to a exhaust shop and have them to seal it back up for me. Just how I do it.

I was surprised to see no flexibility built into this exhaust system, I think I'd put a short flex pipe in so that the motor can torque around without twisting all those rigid exhaust connections at the same time.

I'm asking myself the same questions about exhaust size, trying to balance 2 things: current one leaks, and someday I'd like to swap the 22RE to a 3RZ without redoing the entire exhaust, other than the crossover that will be needed of course.
