22re code 71 HELP
So I bought a 94 pickup 5 speed in the fall with 196k on it. Recently I've had the check engine light come on and poor performance from the engine. My truck has been occasionally idling high even when in gear. When I go from any gear to neutral the rpm's don't drop as they should. I pulled a 71 code every time. I tried cleaning out the first portion of the EGR valve connected to the intake manifold. After it was cleaned I pulled the efi fuse and do connected the battery. The truck started like a champ but the light came on within 15 miles. Any help would be great! Just wanted to get some info on this 71 and if I should get a whole new egr.
Thanks!
Hans

What does 71 mean?
First, since the code means the exhaust stream is coming up as too cool, I'd test the gas temp sensor. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...00egrgaste.pdf
I'm going to guess that isn't the problem. So with the engine running, put your hand on the tube to the intake manifold. I'm told it should be "warm, not hot." Your code says it's "cold."
If doing the regular checks doesn't turn up something obvious http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...77exhaustg.pdf, I'd remove the tube from the plenum. Does it come out easily? Is it completely coated with "gunk"? My plenum had so much gunk it wouldn't have been much longer before that tube was blocked entirely. If that's your case, I would remove the plenum and clean it. I used dishwasher liquid mixed very strong, and it worked well. What would have worked better is if I removed the end caps to get right inside (I'd advise getting replacement caps before you remove the old ones; you'll destroy them as you remove them.)
Good luck!

Cleaned the intake manifold, throttle body, and her valve! Fresh oil change and a bottle of gum out.. Thing runs like I picked it up from the dealer in 94!
