22-RE to 3.4L and 3.4L to Lexus V-8 swap question

Alright so here's the deal with me

I have an 87 4Runner 4WD with the 'ol 22RE and I would like to put a 3.4 in there. I have the perfect doner (I think), my wife's 2001 4Runner.
The thing is I want to put the 3.4L in my 87 4Runner and then put the Lexus V-8 in my wife's 01 4Runner.

#1) can it be done? What is EVERYTHING that I need to replace in the 87?

#2) the things I remove from the 01 for the 87, do they need to be replaced anyways?

#3) Where can I get the things I need for the Lexus swap? what is EVERYTHING I need to replace with the Lexus swap

I promise I have researched this before, and I just want to make sure that I know 100% before I get into this because I will have 2 4Runners not running and I want to measure twice cut once kinda thing.

Thanks in advance

It's tough to come up with "everything" that you're going to need, but we can get you on the right track.

You're going to need an engine, ECU, wiring harness, all related electronic components.

EDIT:

Keep in mind that that is only to get the engine swapped in. You also have to consider transmission, motor mounts, etc.

All R series truck transmissions mount up directly with the 3.4L. I have no idea about standards.

See that is where I get confused?

Also do I need to put the transmission with the engine it came with?

I think you would save yourself a lot of grief if you just put a S/C in your wife's 4runner for her 3.4 with some headers and an exhaust to compliment it. Then it would go like snot. You would also save yourself a ton of money, labour, fabrication, etc, by just leaving her engine in there as we all know the 3.4 to 3.0 or other swap is relatively easy, but going to a Lexus V8 isn't as easy or as documented/commonly done, etc.. And then find a 3.4 for yourself from somewhere.

Tough to say exactly.

It'd be easiest to swap the 3.4L and keep the 5speed in the 87, direct bolt in.

The auto transmission from the 3.4L probably isn't up to the task of 250/260 horse/torque for very long without at least a VB upgrade. On top of that, I don't know if they make a kit for it. You'll need to e-mail Dellow Automotive or CRS (Castlemaine Rod Shop) in AU for pricing on that.

From what I've heard, an auto to manual conversion is a (female dog) and a half to complete.

On the contrary, while the 4.0 swap hasn't been done nearly as much as the 3.4L swap and is more difficult, they swap these in all the time in AU.

Valve body upgrade. It's pretty costly from what I've heard.

Wow! That is a project. I imagine You are going to have lots of expensive left over parts from the 01. If you are leaving the 87 a 5 speed then your 01 auto ecu, and engine harness are better replaced with ones from a 5 speed
4x4 vehicle. Your 01 MAF, TPS compatability with the new ecu will need to be considered. Then there are engine mounts as mentioned and a conversion harness of some type to get the 01 ecu and 87 truck wiring on the same page.

The lexus swap. I would try looking for a donor lexus 470 4x4 and go from there or even a late model v8 4x4 4runner. Get ECU, engine harness, etc. Then there are tranny, motor mount, radiator, IFS oil pan clearance, Intake and hood clearance issues to investigate. Fuel pump capacity from 6 to 8 cylinder.

It will negatively affect the resale of your 01. Who else can work on it???? I would only do it if I never planned to sell it.

yeah I will never sell the 01 or the 87.

okay so what if I got the Lexus engine with the lexus transmission, would it be possible to put that in the 01? Or would it be a pain in the butt?

oh did I mention that I kinda mentioned this to the wife and she said if I do this she is getting a Sequioa. SWEET then I can have the 01 as my DD and turn the 87 into a SAS trail rig. Make mama happy and I get happy too.
