Yet another 'should I buy this truck' thread!

Hey guys,

I'm starting school again in September and won't be able to make the payments on my 94. I found an 84 for cheap locally. What's the opinion on this rig?

Solid front axle obviously, 22R, doesn't look like much rust from the one picture in the ad, 327,000km (200,000mi), needs rear brakes.

Worth $2500CAD or not?

I'd like to sell mine, buy this rig, spend a grand or so lifting it and buying some fatty tires, and call it a day with money to spare. How cheap is it to lift a SA truck?

Is 200,000mi a lot for a 22R? Are the rumors of 500,000mi+ motors true?

I think I'm gonna go for it but I figure I'll ask YTs opinion first.

Thanks guys,

Isaac

edit: just called and found out it's carbed and not efi.

Lifting the SA's are about as cheap as you can get you can do AAL's or anything. I have seen lifts on ebay for $250'ish, one reason I chose to buy an '81 instead of trying to do a ton of stuff to my '05. With out knowing the conversion for CAD to US$, hard to say and pictures would help. EFI came out in '85 so those are at a premium in just about every market.
I bought an '84 when I stationed in Alaska in '92 for 1500 (130k miles), rebuilt the motor, wheeled the sh** out of it for 5 years, than sold it in '97 for $5k (165K miles). I saw the truck last year, still on the road..a little worse for wear but I know it was mine because of the bumpers my buddy made for me and welded to the frame.
I think it all goes to how well the truck gets taken care of.
Keep in mind too that too big of tires and you will want to regear ($$$) the truck should have stock 4.10's that with 31's or 32's you should be fine with..

8 weeks ago I drove 5-7 trucks with 200K'ish miles on them, some were running great others barely. But found my '81 for $2K with 120k orginal miles...
Let us know what you do...SA's ride rough, but i love 'em

when i called they said they'd let it go for $2k (I think the dollar is at around 94 cents so $2kcad is roughly $2100US). They're looking for a bigger truck to haul kids in but still need a pickup so I think I'll offer my 94 for trade + money on their part. I could likely get out of this deal with a new rig and my loan completely paid off

Here's a pic:

I like the look of the 2nd gen trucks (whatever gen they are?), + having a solid axle would be nice. And I've never owned a carbed vehicle so I'd like to own one to learn more.

Road trip tomorrow to see it

Thanks for the help guys

Are brake drums/shoes/springs interchangeable between 94 and 84 pickups? I've got all new rear brakes sitting in the shop now that I still haven't put on the 94.

That looks pretty nice. I also have an extended cab and that extra foot of space is worth its weight in gold.

I figure if I can score this rig for $2k, sell mine for $7k, spend $1k on a lift and used tires, I'll have a good mall runner and can pay off most of my loan

Hopefully it doesn't sell!

If the frame is solid, I'd be all over that! Sure, EFI is nice, but a carb is ok too. At the worst, you could replace it with a Weber or Holley.

no, the rear drums on your 94 IFS rear are significantly bigger than a SA rear's drums

I saw the truck today. The rockers, cab corners, and bedsides were full of significant rot. It wouldn't stay running when you put the clutch in, and I almost died on the test drive because the brakes were nonexistant. The left rotor had a 1/8" gouge in it and it didn't even look like there were pads in the caliper.

I figure just to buy the steel replacement panels to do both rockers, both cab corners, and both bedsides would be upwards of $700, and I can't weld for jack nor do I have a garage. And the guy wouldn't come down much in price; he was stuck at $2k. I offered $1k which I still thought was too high. The rust holes in the cab corners were big enough to stick my head into.

Also, somehow someone managed to punch a big spikey object through the floor into the fender well.

Looks like I'm waiting for a nicer 84-88 with a 22RE..

Edit: I should mention I probably wouldn't care much about the rust holes except it wouldn't pass inspection like that. And if you're gonna fix it, you may as well fix it right.

The paint is actually pretty good, it's only a year or two old. It's just the angle of the picture guy gave me sort of covers the rust.

Anyone wanna trade their 84-88 pickup + cash for my 94?

Todays Dollar?

Not a hope, Canadian dollar is worth 95 cents US, so the difference isnt much.

People are selling there 2nd gens out here in B.C. in WAY worse shape than you said that ones in for $3k+, 3rd gens are going for $7000 + In pretty much any condition.. 1st gens are no where to be found, parts are getting harder to find/very expensive.
