Tranny Swap

Hey guys I got an 85 4Runner with an auto. I want to swap in a 5 speed. How much of a job is this to do? I am more interested in the EXTRA stuff like linkage, clutch pedal, etc. I assume all I need to do for the tranny itself is put a flywheel clutch and bolt up the tranny. I have access to a wrecked 4runner with a good 5 speed and all the parts for cheap. Please advise. Thanks.

You need the peddle assembly, a clutch master cylinder, the clutch lines, fly wheel and clutch and pilot bearing. You should be able to do it in a weekend.

hmmm, I have an '85 4x4 pickup with a 5-speed. Wife wants an auto tranny. Don't mean to hijack the thread but is it difficult to swap a 5-speed for an auto? And please tell me how stupid I am for even considering it.

And CAPT D, what condition is the auto in?

Be less trouble to swap wives.

Meet in the middle at my shop. I can do it.

The auto to 5 spd and vice versa, not the wife swapping part.

Well, I was in the great state of Alabama last weekend, but we won't get into that...

Would such a swap involve cutting any metal? moving frame mounts?

Shouldn't. Pretty much a bolt on kinda thing except for drilling clutch MC hole in dash on the other truck.

Damn LSU Fans always thinking in reverse. Oh and it just dawned on me why and Where you were in AL, probably Tiger Stadium. LOL.

The auto works fine, I just want the 5 speed. I bought this 4 runner in Feb of this year, and have had zero trouble with it. The tranny works good. I actually was going to get it serviced shortly after buying it. The guy I know at Toyota shop that likes the old trucks said there was nothing to service. Just drive them. He said if something ever happens to it, there are plenty of them around to get cheap. He said the fluid looked good to leave it alone. So I have not bothered it. I just drive it. We really could meet at Wabbits and swap. Hell why don't we just swap trucks. We can meet in Biloxi.

Cool, we could just pack the women and send them off in our trucks...if mine could drive a manual.

the hole through the floor may have to be trimmed toward the front.
