Odd timing problem, need some helps

Odd timing problem, need some helps

Howdy guys, been a while since I posted and got my truck up and running. Anyhow:

The truck it self is an 85 with an 82 22r in it. However I kept all the 85 components except for the exhaust (which is an LCE header), head and block. Intake and most all other components are 85 at least as far as I know. Just thought I'd toss that in in case it was a problem.

Now I've taken the car in for pre somg tests and came with some results. First time failing emissions, visual and timing. Did some tinkering, chased some vac lines and rebuilt the carb and now I pass emissions, but still failing the timing and visual. So I've taken on the task of timing it like a boss. Problem I'm having is that I'm quite lost as to where to time it to. Sticker above the hood only reads 0 at 950 rpms with vacuum lines plugged. While I've also read from posts 5 btdc at idle with lines unplugged or 12 with lines connected.

When I disconnect the dizzy lines and plug them I get no change in timing however. And running at both 0 and 5 makes it run like poop. Advancing it to 12 or past and it seems to run smoother. Whenever it's given a bit of throttle though, it doesn't change at all. I don't get any movement in with the crankpulley mark whatsoever. Don't know whats going on but I've done a bit of reading and I think it's the dizzy diaphram.

Just thought I'd hear better more professional opinions before I go out spending a pretty penny on a new diaphram.

I'm sorta interested in this too, my timing does not. Hangs from 0 with lines plugged or unplugged but my diaphragm seems perfectly functional.

I read up, taking the lines off the distributor diaphram and are able blow through both of them freely means the diaphram in it is bad. You should be getting resistance when pushing or sucking air through one of the hoses.

Per the fsm, applying vacuum should actuate the advance mechanism, correct?

Correct me if I am wrong here, but I believe the 5 degrees BTDC is for the fuel injected 22re. I believe that the carbed engine is supposed to be set at 0.

Alrighty, well I'ma end up hitting the Junkyard today and seeing if I can find a working distributor advance mechanism. Paying 100 bucks for a new one seems a tad extreme. I'll keep posted if it ends up working

Ended up changing out the distributor diaphram with one from the yard today. Might end up snagging a couple other things off it with another trip. But the truck times a little easier. Got the carb tuned a bit better with running the idle mixture 4 turns out and lowered the idle down to 850.

Only thing is I can't get the distributor to to 0tdc with the timing light. it gets close but sits at what would be around 2. With the vacuum lines from the distributor plugged in it drops down to 10. I just turned the dizzy to 12 plugged in and it goes to 5 when unplugged. Runs smooth though so I might live with it for the time being. Just major hopes she'll pass smog.
