I have a small gas leak on my 1985 toyota pickup. It is definitely coming from the gas tank area, but space is limited to check with the bed on. The strange thing is that the leak isn't a constant one. Sometimes it's worse than others. I don't drive it often, but obviously need to fix it. When it's bad it will usually leave a 4" spot on the ground. Other times it's less than an inch, and will even be nonexistant. I'm wondering if one of the vent lines are backing up. The previous owner I got it from said he had the tank dropped and cleaned out. I can see where it's dripping from, but it's only after the vehicle is stopped that the leak occurs. I know I'm going to have to pull the bed off, but was wondering if any of you guys had a similar problem.

does it do it the most after uou fill up the tank? or is it too random to really be specific.

im guessing you checked this already, but is it coming from the drain plug on the bottom of the tank, above the skid plate

It's definitely higher than the drain plug. I'm probably going to drop the tank this weekend to it.

It's super common, especially in areas of the country where there is a rust problem for the lines going to the gas tank to rust out.

Even here in Washington state where we really have no rust problem I've seen it a few times.

The front part of the tank where the lines hook up is directly below the space between the bed and the cab. It's common for a shovel full of dirt or wood chips to fall down there if anyone gets a load dropped into the bed by a front end loader. This dirt then just sits there and rusts away untill you have a leak. It will also rust out the line going back to the rear brakes.

Also if someone pulls the tank from under the truck it's difficult to get all the lines hooked up again properly, usually more so if they are careless or in a rush.

i done got myself a parts truck, its in great shape, i paid 500 for it.

You might want to make your current rig with rotted frame the parts truck and swap over parts to get it running. Would definitely be easier.
