How well does your 22R rev/go?
About to take my Dad's '84 4Runner for an extended period, lots of ski trips planned this winter, and parking the RSX til Feb-Mar or so.
Love the truck, absolutely to death. One curiosity has always bothered me, it runs rough past like 3k rpms. I know it's probably not designed to be a high reving engine, it's not in front of me, but IIRC redline isn't technically until like 5500-6000 rpm, but it will absolutely not go there. Hell, even past 4krpm gets a bit scary.
The truck isn't fast, but that doesn't bother me. 55 mark is orange highlighting so I've always assumed recommended speed or so. Can push to 65 on relatively flat terrain. Can only reach 70 or so on a downhill grade... Normal?
He's done clutch himself, and pretty sure he said he took the flywheel off to be balanced. That didn't effect anything but made clutch engagement work better. Sometime around 2004-5ish, one of his valves chipped and blew a chunk through the engine, only made it 310kmiles . He rebuild it, had the head sent off for refinishing, polishing, something like that. All new valves, timing chain, tuned up everything. Still runs the same *shrug*.
Never really bothered me, I've asked Dad, but he's said it's behaved like this since he got it. It's certainly behaved like that since I was 15 and learning to drive, ohh back around 1997 or so. So I dismissed it, accepted it, it is what it is. But seems a lot of power potential could be gained if it ran smoother and could make use of those revs.
Since then, I drove a couple cars without rev counters. First car blew me away was my old '92 Maxima, would effortlessly and smoothly rev to something like 6000+ rpm, sold it off long ago. And my current RSX which will do it's 8300 redline, no sweat, and love it.
sooo, thoughts. Behaving as suspected or needs something adjusted?

Peak torque at 2800rpm, peak hp at 4800 rpm.
My '95 22res love 3.5K to 5.25K rpm. as soon as it hits 3.5K its like a kick in the butt. I usually cruise ar 4K rpm in 3rd gear just because it feels good, sounds good and it does it no problem. It will do 4K all day and not overheat. I HAVE to hit 4K to keep speed when going through the mountain pass south of Fairbanks, and theres some long, steep hills.
oops just read you're a carb. carbs arent my cup-o-tea.....Something about the jets ....?...

I shift at 3,000. Cruising at highway speeds I'm typically around 3200-3500. I'd say there's some kind of issue with the truck. Whether it's carb, emissions, or something else I don't know. What do you mean by "scary"? My truck doesn't like to go much over 3000rpms, I will say that. Engine gets pretty loud. But mines an '83. Most of the other engines rev just fine.
And the opposite of what you're thinking is true. Because of the small size of these engines, they're meant for high rpms to get their power.
