Headgasket

Hey guy's. I just did the headgasket and timing on my 84. It did not need done when i started. I did it because i wanted to know the maintenance of my engine and it needed a coolant flush too. i overheated it once and thats it. Now that i've done everything the head gasket leaks, got the timing on and ran it for like 5 seconds and my oil was milkshake. Any idea's? I was told that copper spray may help. but i don't wanna rip it apart again. What about that headgasket sealer stuff?

Change your oil..
You probably leaked coolant into your oil during the headgasket change.

Yea, change your oil first, and use cheap oil and do it a couple of times to make sure you get all the moisture out, and if that doesnt work then you're pulling the head most likely.

alright. I pulled the head and replaced the gasket. I noticed a spot where i hadn't cleaned off all the old gasket residue. Its by the very front left head bolt inlet. Between the bolt hole and the timing cover. Its just enough to feel if you run your finger over it. I got that off then noticed the timing cover gasket was sticking up and cutting into the gasket as well. Shaved that with a razor blade. Put the new gasket in with a layer of copper coat. Done. ....Gunna work on the timing tonight and get it running, thats all thats left.

I started at 8 and finished at 1 in the morning lol

And the oil change did not help. I forgot to mention that!

Ah.
So sounds like you might have jacked up the HG when you initially did it.
Glad to know it's fixed.

Protip for the timing. Set your engine at TDC on #1, then clock your dizzy about 35 degrees before #1.. It'll line up exactly, because when you install it it turns.

Okay i got it running. All cylinders are firing. Engine, valve timing, and ignition timing are dead on. It wants to start on its own but i have to floor it fora sec to get it to fire up. Once it does, the timing mark is about a half inch or so to the left of 0. if i dial it into 0 it doesnt start, run, or stay running. Any idea's?

I have the timing set a little after 12. Thats the only way it'll run. If i retard it to 0 it bogs out and dies unless i'm full boar on the throttle. It run's pretty good. No miss's or backfire or after fire. I tried going tooth forward and backward and that didn't help any. I'm starting to think that maybe i have a vacuum leak but i checked all of my hoses. None were cracked or disconnected so idk

Well sounds to me like you got everything right. I know youve done it and im not calling you stupid or anything, but iv done this lol... Check your plug wires, for correct order, and to make sure they arent burnt, Secondly make sure your rotor bug and things are ok. Hope you figure it out man. mine did the same thing and my stupid self had two wires crossed, and one was burnt in half, it ran like a single popper tractor.

Did you mess with the timing chain at all Steve? Seen them do this when off a tooth. Maybe get the dizzy in a tooth off?

Btw, glad you got back in there and snugged it up! Also, ...good to see you again, man! Last time I saw a post by you was either ON my build thread or the thread before I started that one. Think you were one of the first posts, hahaa. LOT's changed since then for me, hahaha.
