Removing it would be a bad idea if you still reside in CA. It will definitely not pass visual inspection and it could change the emissions causing to fail the sniffer as well. Not worth all the hassle IMO.

Like 4crawler said, it pumps air into the exhaust to speed up oxidation in the catalytic converter on cold start-ups..and I think at idle too. So ya, don't take it off if you are anywhere where they do emissions.
Its comparable to the Pulse Air Injection Reaction (PAIR) on later models, just a different set up.

Wouldn't a smog pump be used to CREATE smog?
how about an anti-smog pump?
or just a simple air pump...because thats what it is

I know that if it gets out of whack, it'll make your exhaust manifold glow a pretty red!
