Typically they inject air into he exhaust manifold to emissions control purposes. At least that was the way it was set up in my old '74 Landcruiser. Might have issues with the visual inspection for smog checks.

Removing it would be a bad idea if you still reside in CA. It will definitely not pass visual inspection and it could change the emissions causing to fail the sniffer as well. Not worth all the hassle IMO.

Like 4crawler said, it pumps air into the exhaust to speed up oxidation in the catalytic converter on cold start-ups..and I think at idle too. So ya, don't take it off if you are anywhere where they do emissions.
Its comparable to the Pulse Air Injection Reaction (PAIR) on later models, just a different set up.

Don't they just call them "smog" pumps?

Wouldn't a smog pump be used to CREATE smog?
how about an anti-smog pump?
or just a simple air pump...because thats what it is

Its kinda like how in Alaska people call snowmobiles "snowmachines" but everywhere else people say snowmachines make snow...

Water cooler doesn't make that water any more "hip".

Yea, that's what I thought, too. But, non-catalytic models have Air Injection systems as well! (My '78 Fed 20R, for instance.)

"For reburning the unburnt HC and CO in the exhaust port, compressed air from the air pump is blown into the exhaust port." Probably does what you said, also, on catted engines.

I know that if it gets out of whack, it'll make your exhaust manifold glow a pretty red!
