Sorry no help here but Im in the same boat. I have an 85 4runner. Its nice to see another girl who likes 4x4s and doing thier own work. I see you are in albany. Is that albany NY? If so Im just down the road about two hours. Near poughkeepski.
I have to take my heater valve off and try to derust it and then ill flush the core and see if those help. I put a piece of cardboard in front of the grill to see if that helped but it doesnt much. So im still trying to figure mine out. Ill be watching here to see whats up with yours.

Actually i may be a bit of help. The pics show the valve and everything is there. The lever you have to move is hanging down on the bottom of the valve and there is a blue cable that comes from the dash to the lever. On mine its so rusted the cable broke off. So to move it takes alot of WD 40 and a pair of plyers. Im not sure if out or in is for heat. You can pull the lever in and out and see which gives you heat. I hope this helps. If yours is like mine its rusted almost solid. I am probably going to bypass it with a small pipe temporarily. I cannot find a new heater valve to but so im going to try to derust mine with a wire wheel. No auto stores carry this part for some reason. Sharon

At least one person here has retrofitted the new style which the auto store do carry. This is the route I am gonna go when I finally get around to doing mine.

P.S. Poughkeepsie is near where my ex-wife and kids live. Hopewell Jct.

Hey Not sure if this helps. I have an 85 runner and my heat stoped working on me, and it turned out it was the lever under the dash that conects to the one ON the dash. I had to reach under the passenger side and move the lever with my hand. I'm pretty sure this is the one that connects to the one everyone else is talking about in the engine bay. It worked for me I hope this helps.
