84 toy 22r engine rebuild

I recently purchased a 84 Toy SR5 Exd Cab 4x4 with a 22r. The engine had a knock ( rod ) and I pulled it out to have it rebuilt. The crank is bad along with the #4 rod, which I have found replacements for but the head is shot from corrosion which I am unable to find a replacement. This is an unmodified/uncut truck with 169500 mi, original as far as I know. Any advice on engine fix is much appreciated.

New head from engnbldr for a couple hundred bucks. Performance 22re also sells new heads.

My concern is that it is a carb engine.

Check their websites, but I do believe they make heads for efi and carbed motors

Why is that a concern?

I was told that the heads are different from pre 85 and 85 up.

And? Get a head for a pre-85 engine. They sell them.

engnbldr only sells 85-95 heads. At least not listed on their website, but this has nothing to do with carb'd versus efi. For example my 87 carb'd engine has the same head as an efi engine.

From what I have seen, not experienced, the 22re head will fit a 22r engine just fine. The 22 is just the 22nd revision of the "R" engine. EFI or carb'd, the engine doesnt know.

But there is a sponsor of the Yotatech site, toyotacarparts.com that says they have heads with new cam springs, etc, for 269. Look around, you can find what you need.

If you have domed head pistons the heads from engbuilder will not work. You will have to find a salvage and rebuilt if needed. I think there are a couple of threads were people have had the dome of the piston heads for the pre 85's shaved to be flat and then at that point a 85 or newer head is a possibility but dont have any personal experience with the matter. Hope this adds to the confusion.
