22RE exhaust question?help?

Well I'm a couple weeks off from welding up an exhaust on my 1985 4runner but I need some information from all the toy exhaust pros out there. Now I know this is not a 2 stroke but I have heard from some people that back pressure is needed. I have collected some exhaust pipes from donor vehicles most of it stainless, I have a Doug Thorley TRi-Y header, and I might just be a dirtbag and run no cat (no Idaho Emissions). The pipe size is 5.7 cm(2 1/4 inch for the metrically challanged ). Please clear me up on the back pressure needs of a 22RE. Back to being the toy cancer doctor. I hate rust so damn bad I cant begin to express.

You do need a little back presure or you will loose bottom end power and torque. I wouldn`t go any larger than 2 1/4" unless you have a built engine.

So Tri-Y , 2 1/4, with a freeflow cat and a muffler or toy stock straight through muffler/resonator otta have me getting all the power and runnin strong? My 22RE is definatly not built and I need all the low end I can get should I go smaller pipes to steer clear of backfireing or poor running?

i'm curious about this too....wondering how these 22re's run w/out a Cat. I think mines hit a few too many rocks or something & internals broke loose. It sounds like it's rattling inside & I lost tons of power.
Off to search more....

According to engnbldr 2" from the head to the muffler and a 2.25" tailpipe is best for low-end and no header. Stock manifold and head pipe.

Thats his opinion. I actually run that setup and I like it but I've not 'felt' what a header can do but for me this setup has worked fine and despite 31's on stock gearing it gets up and goes enough for me.

I'm carb'd but that has no significance.

I'm thinking about replacing the cat on mine tho, its original (thats 20yrs) but I'm not sure if its causing any problems.

2" from the header out, is PERFECT for this engine, IF you run only mandrel bent pipes (or weld a bunch of mandrel bends and straight sections of pipe to make your exhaust). Put on the muffler of your choice and you'll have a great power band with this size exhaust.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but i figured that it needed this:

http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=659727

It has alot of information, along with this:

http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/html_pr...torquemyth.htm

I'm lazy and today my entire exhaust fell off, so i researched and was looking for exactly what problems could arise from not having any back pressure whatsoever. I'm going to have to fix it eventually to pass inspection, so hope this helps for anyone looking for info.

I tried a straight pipe to replace the cat trick for about a week...waste of time & $$.
It was a dog & had no torque.
Ended up getting a Doug Thorley Ti-Y ceramicoated header, hi-flow cat & a "pro-flow"muffler. Was the shop's cheaper brand comparable to flowmaster
great performance
Sounds awesome - gets compliments all the time
a lil being too!

Rebuilt 22RE
I added Pace Setter Headers
2.25" all the way. with Highflo Cat and Muffler.
Tons on low end torque, Sounds great, Don't have to drop gears going uphill
That's with 5" Suspension Lift, 33" x 12.5 Tires
The headers made a TON of difference...!

Before I redid the exahust I had no cat, with the new setup I have one. It still has a ton of power and now I dont have to smell the rich exahust roll in the back window of my 4runner.

hello, I have stock exhaust , and when rear window is down the exhaust fumes roll inside, did re-rout the exhaust pipe so it doesn't enter the truck?

No I did not re-route it. I guess what I was trying to say is that when I had No Cat the exahust smelled very rich, I damn near couldnt drive with my rear window down. Now that I have a new Cat I dont even notice the smell of exahust.!
I would recommend having the Cat installed as opposed to not..!

^^ Thanks Rattlers..! I would guess your Cat is the same age as your truck. Mine was 26 years old when I did the swap so that was a good long life..!

93 4cyle 22re stock manifold no cat and a muffler , 246,456 mile my cat clogged so i used a test pipe. runs the same as stock smells a little, started running ruff after warm up and almost put the cat back on. then i figured out my tps was failing. unplugged and running strong. any cons of unplugged tps, i have a new one to install just asking is all
