Hello all. I just got my 85 auto pickup back from having a good 22re converted to carb. The truck starts and idles good but if I don't take off very gradual it starts to hesitate and sputter. However, if I floor it it will go no problem. It also has trouble keeping the same speed on the freeway and if I try to increase speed without a definite push on the pedal it does the same sputter routine. I have read similar posts and checked out all the previous recommendations ie. plugs, wires, dist, and all the vacuum lines seem good. Is this symptomatic of a bad carb? It always happens at the same rpm's right before the trans shifts. My gas mileage has suffered as well. I appreciate any input.

I was messing with it earlier and decided to watch the sight glass while I pulled the throttle to the point in which the motor hesitates. It looks like a bunch of air bubbles are in there. Does this mean anything? It definitely sounds like fuel starvation but why at mid rpm and not at low and high? This is my first carbureted vehicle so any help is much appreciated.

Considering the sight glass is a direct window to the goasoline your carburetor is receiving from the fuel pump/fuel line... I'd say you have a fuel leak. Perhaps a pinhole leak that doesn't drip gas, but is sucking in air.
I'd start by replacing every rubber portion of your fuel line with new hose. If that doesn't work, maybe your plastic filter is cracked. If that doesn't work, get a new fuel pump. (Thats in order from least-expensive, on).
It doesn't happen at low RPM because your fuel bowl is full and it doesn't happen at hi RPM because the camshaft is making that fuel pump work overtime. But in mid range, right about the time your fuel bowl needs a refill, the fuel pump is not working at full speed and can not accomodate whatever error you have in your fuel lines that screws with the pressure (5-7psi).
So, as stated, either a cracked fuel hose or a cracked (or) clogged fuel filter.

I checked the rubber fuel lines and filter and they all looked new. I watched the sight glass again for a longer time. At idle the fuel is above the top v but when I open the throttle to about 2500 rpm the fuel level drops below the bottom ^ and starts the surging. Is there a way to test the fuel pump? It seems to be working properly because the idle is perfect. Would the fuel/air mixture be an issue? This is my dd and my brain is racked trying to get this thing running right.

I had all of the carb parts from the original motor. The original motor had a blown head gasket and warped block. I found a wrecked efi truck with only 65k on the ticker cheap so I bought it and did the easier of the two conversions. In retrospect I probably should have kept it efi being that now I have to deal with a crappy carb.

efi to carb and carb to efi topics as well as which engine will work in XX chassis have likely already been discussed.
