I have a 1985 22r pickup that wont start when it is cold unless I put a little gas in the carb. Is ot my choke? How can I fix this?

It might be the accelerator pump diaphragm or the passage for it may be plugged. The way to tell is by removing the air breather with the engine off and work the throttle, while looking down the throat of the carb. You should see a squirt of gas when the throttle is opened. It could be the choke but it would not hurt to check the acc pump.

Two things to look at:

1) verify the the Automatic Choke is working by opening the top of the air cleaner, then depress the gas pedal at least two times. As you are standing in front of the engine, the choke plate is on the left of the 2 barrels, the one farthest away from the valve cover. A functioning automatic choke will close the plate. The choke plate can also be closed by rotating the throttle lever at the back of the carburetor by hand while under the hood.

2) as swampfox stated, verify that your Acceleration Pump is working. After you have depressed the gas pedal, open the choke plate, either with your finger or a screwdriver. Then operate the throttle while looking down the throat, you should see a squirt of fuel every time you operate the throttle.

Check those two things first then report back.
