I've got a pretty hard vibration from about 55- 65 MPH. It fades as you reach 65 and actually goes away at 65. Drive shaft is good as I had it rebuilt and balanced a few years ago. I greased the u-joints a few weeks ago. Is there a such thing as pumping too much grease through the nipple? I always thought you were supposed to pump until you see grease coming out of u-joint. Any thoughts?

You may need to replace your Rear U joint I had to replace mine. You are supposed to pump grease until it comes out. Have fun with Ujoints I have special tool to get mine out haha no hammer or sockets for me!

I replaced the driveshaft about three years ago along with the u-joints. I'll replace the u-joints again but I don't think I have should have to replace u-joints every three years.
Slacker, I was thinking tires out of balance too. I'm thinking start with the tire balance since it's the cheapest and easiest and work from there.

I'd go with checking the tires first too. I've had this happen too, but it was at lower speeds...around 35-45 mph then it would go away just like yours.

Another thing to check is the rear axle bearings. The bearings on my 86 4Runner were so bad when I got it I could almost pull them a part with my hands.

One thing you can do is run in front wheel drive and see if the vibes remain or go away:

Another option is to check the rear axle for bent shafts or out of round tires/wheels. Put the rear end up on jack stands, block the front wheels and put it in 1st gear with the engine idling. Then use a pointer on the rear tire then wheel to see if there is any wobble as they spin. If you find wobble, pull the wheel off and see if that wobble appears on the on the brake drum. If so, the axle shaft is bent, if not it may be an out of round wheel or tire.

I've had both bent axle shafts as well as out of round tires over the years.

I'm kind of thinking it might not be the tires because if the tires were out of balance the steering wheel would vibrate. There is no vibration in the steering wheel at all. As far as the rear axle bearings, I don't know what they look like or what condition they're in.

After re-reading the thread I noticed you didn't specify whether the vibration was coming from the front or back. Can you tell where it's coming from and maybe even which side it's coming from?

I think you could rule out the ujoints because every time ive seen an issue with the ujoints its only at take off. If you unbolt the driveshaft flange and move the flange in your hand up and down and side to side, and it feels smooth then you're fine. if its tough or you feel some binding, you need new ujoints.

If it's coming from the back then the steering wheel wouldn't vibrate anyway if a wheel is out of balance. I'm still leaning towards that. It doesn't sound like you've done anything to bend an axle and you would definitely notice a braking problem if they were bound up. Check the edges of your rims and see if there's any places that are kinda clean where a wheel weight used to be.

Also check the tires themselves for bulges or anything weird. Maybe you've got a busted belt in one of your tires.

That's true, when i had my spair mounted up, my truck vibrated alot, but no wheel movement. turns out my balancing weight fell off.
