Safari Snorkel on a 1st Gen Truck
After a close call going through a long, deep mud puddle a few weeks ago I've been looking at Safari Snorkels online. So far I can't find one that is made for first generation trucks. Has anyone installed one for the 1984-? on theirs? If not I'm up for being the first to try and I will let everyone know when I do. That probably wouldn't be for at least 6 months, but we'll see how the cash flow looks.

That snorkel looks great! I'd love to see some more pics and I write-up on that one. Also I found an Airflow snorkel made for a Hilux that I think I can make work. What do y'all think?

I think it would work. I think I have seen it on other 1st gen trucks
actually you're incorrect. The factory 1st gen intake is on the driver's side of the truck
the one posted by Gmack is routed to the passenger side:

oh I see. thats my bad. i saw the other one plus i figured with the carb over there thats where the intake would be. whats with toyota running their intakes to the opposite sides of the motor?!?!?! lol

I built a air box (cookie tin) and connected it to the snorkel with tubing from a RV septic tube... I have about $80.00 in it. I have to replace the cookie tin, son broke it. I bought a water tight electrical box from Lowes... still have less than $100.00 in it. I am running a Weber, the box is bolted between the carb and the filter.
I found the head for the snorkel on Ebay.. and the pipe and rubber adapter came from Lowes.. hope this helps...

I'm not sure which one I want to try. I have the stock intake now. I have thought about getting a Webber for some more power though. I'm stoked that I have the info I need to do either one now! Thanks again, and I'll let you all know what I end up doing with pictures.

Idea 2- Submersible Distributor
After being stuck in a water hole the size of a small ocean, I decided it was time to waterproof the distributor. This mod is very cheap and will save you a great deal of swearing
I pulled the cap off and found that theres a vent hole to allow the air to expand and contract as it heats up
There will be a little cap on the hole like this, do away with that worthless pos
Next, you will want to run a breather hose much like a diff breather.
You can get this for dirt cheap at your local NAPA or hardware store
You will want to run your breather into the cab or adapt it onto the airbox, I chose the cab because i didn't want a potential leak point in the snorkel
When it's time to re-install, add a bead of RTV sealant, or Right Stuff (right stuff is the new duct tape)
Then reinstall you cap and zip tie the wires on there with some dielectric grease
Your distributor is now submersible
Idea 3- Electric Fan
Every time I hit a water crossing i could hear my fan dipping into the water. When the fan blades are in the water, they dont turn very well however the pulley is still spinning full speed the difference is taken up in the clutch. When this happens it eats the clutch alive. My solution was an electric fan from NAPA. I set it up on a toggle switch so i can have it on during wheeling and turn it off for water crossings.
This is a pretty straightforward installation and only cost me $140 (not bad for an electric fan)
It came with everything needed to install, although i was a little disappointed with the method of mounting, i will have to do something about that when i have the time.

Nice tips! Also, there is a gasket for the bottom of the stock distributor cap that is pretty cheap from LC Engineering. And, although costly, a DUI distributor is sealed and waterproof as well as higher voltage . I'm going to have to get around to doing some of these mods before I go through any deep puddles or river crossings again!

Lcengineering does carry a snorkel for the 1sr gen. Its not on thier website or I atleast couldnt find it. But it is in thier mail order catolog. If give them a call Im sure they would be able to help you out. 928 855 6341

I run mine in the cab in the dash with a cone filter lol you cant see it and it does its job awsome....... with a snorkel it helps with the water but what about the dust... I figure If I sink to my heater vents then I'm screwd anyway lol
