Hi, I'm new here, just bought this '79.
It is rough as hell....

As you can see it needs alot of work, not to mention it needs some off road tires badly.
One good thing is the guy I bought it from is a mechanic and he just installed a newly rebuilt 22R.

Right now my plans are:
Fix ignition, there is some funky wiring going on and doesnt require a key to start.
Fix lighting, again funky wiring lights wired straight to battery, turn signals don't work.
Fix back brakes and parking brake, they are unhooked.
Fix seal at top of windshield, has a small leak.
Find some 31" tires, don't know if the gearing is good enough for bigger.
Find a decent bed ( that will be really hard), or fabricate a flatbed.
Install new shocks.
Check my front supsension/driveline, there is a bad vibration at 50 mph or higher.
Other than that she just needs alot of loving.

Tires: 31's are a good choice to get you going...you can usually find a good set of used ones cheap
Leaky windshield--I did a new winshield and seal a few months after I bought mine due to the 'small leak'--ripped out the carpet to find this after I don't how long it was leaking

welding in some new metal for floors after the first of the year..

I don't think mine has as much rust. I need to get a bed for this thing too. The guy I bought it from was the original owner and fabricated this utility bed to use with his welding business. The bed probably weighs 8X more than a stock bed, so breaking 45mph uphill is a battle.

That is nice and clean. Always like that factory paint job, don't see it much any more
Hope your 5 Speed conversion goes easy. DeathCougar's post pretty much gave you all the info you needed..
Awesome truck. I checked out the build on both websites. Probably one of the best equipped 1st Gen's out there. It gave me some ideas for my '81
