Fuel Tank?

Fuel Tank?
I was wondering how many gallons is the stock fuel tank on a 79-83 short bed 4x4 truck. Mine was really low and I was able to get 11.5 gallons in it. Also is the long bed tank bigger and if so will it fit on the short bed frame? Thanks

i have pondered swapping the longbed tank (I think it is 4 gallons bigger). clearance is limited by the horsecollar crossmember middle of the frame and the upper rear shock mount crossmember. Not sure if the Filler neck is in the same location or not.
when I converted to longer rear springs/flipped u bolts my upper shock mount was moved back about 5-6" so I am thinking I might be able to squeeze one in.

Cool! Keep me posted if you follow through with it.

It would be faster and in the long run cheaper to buy a custom over sized fuel tank. I have a custom 26 gallon SS tank but if you research the WEB or magazines you can find one I am sure at a reasonable price. Stock tank on shortbeds was 13+ gallons. Good luck.

^^that would be cool, but part of the fun is trying to make something work.
Trekkerpaul measured a long bed tank for me, it is 7" longer than the SB tank.
got to thinking a little bit more about this and remembered a thread I started when I first got my '81 about gas tanks:
here is how Corax mounted an aux fuel tank:

that might be an option. find something at the bone yard out of a carb equipped vehicle and use it as an extra tank.
edit: here is another option:

OCDROPZONE is correct, all 1979-1983 Toyota shortbed trucks had 13.5 gallon fuel tanks and all 1979-1983 Toyota longbed trucks and C&C units had 16.0 gallon trucks. This information is listed in original sales brochures, owners manuals and factory service manuals under "Capacities".

My subaru has a 16 gallon tank, but my gas light comes on, I drive another 20 miles, and it only takes 13 gallons...
My truck will run out of gas, and will only take just over 12. I believe what the brochures say, but either I can never quite get all the gas out, or the gas pump isn't accurate. For all practical applications, from what I can tell, my truck will take 12 gallons.

I just put 12 gallons in mine this morning with the gauge on 'E' I still carry a 2.5 gallon can, just in case
gas tank comparison
long bed on Top-37.5 " long 16 gal
short bed on bottom, 30.25" 13.5 gal.
I was thinking it might be an easier conversion(on my truck due to shock mount/axle placement changed from stock) but now the filler neck becomes on issue when comparing the tanks side by side....

Just a thought. What about a flex hose for the fuel neck? Any luck with that or just overall size the problem? Cool that someone has the parts to let us know!! Thanks for your time and effort.
