AC UNIT coming along...i got pics
well after many junk yard searching i finally found a complete one(so i think)...i have a question to all who have gone down this road.i think a have an almost complete unit except for the compressor that i will purchase new..the question would be....what parts am i missing??any input, comments would much help.
some pics

Do you have the compressor mounting bracket? I don't see the center section of the AC ductwork in the picture (the part that the two ducts in the picture attach to - the middle dash vent also attaches to this piece). Do you have the VSV (vacuum switching valve) that runs the idle-up on the carburetor? Other than that it looks fairly complete as far as I can tell.

i have all the other pieces i think..now the VSV i dont have or have any idea of what it looks like!!...does any one have a pic of it?..i have the center piece that the other duct work attaches too,the mounting bracket i can get from a truck in a different JY.if any one has any picks of their ac units that dont mind posting it would be a lot of help.

Here is a picture of my engine:
Sorry its not a very good picture. I circled a VSV, but I don't think its the actual one for the AC (don't think you can see that one in the pic) It is just a small cylindrical thing with two wires and two vacuum ports. When power is applied to the VSV (via the idle stabilizing amplifier) it allows vacuum to pass through. I ran a vacuum line from the VSV to the fast idle diaphragm on the carburetor. It increases the idle when the compressor kicks on so the truck doesn't stall. I can get a better picture of the actual VSV for the AC if you want.
Not sure about the thermo switch. What year is your truck and what year is the AC system you have from? My FSM (for an 80) does not list a thermo switch. It's hard to tell from the picture (its kind of blurry) where the placement is on the truck or what it looks like. Do you know what it does?
My system has something called a thermistor which controls when the compressor turns on and off by measuring the temperature inside the cooling unit. Maybe its the same thing??

if you can get a better picture of the VSV that would be a lot of help.do all early toyotas use a VSV?.
my truck is a 1982 and the unit came of a 81.5-83 2wd i believe....from the picture it looks like its on the driver side either the top or bottom if the wheel well.i cant find the one i did a search on anymore, but i do remember it saying some thing about controlling temperature...might be the same one....can u check to see if you have it?

Not sure if all early Toyotas use a VSV, but I'll get a picture of the VSV tomorrow. I don't have any AC components on my driver's side wheel well. But after studying my FSM a little more I think that the Thermo switch is just the AC switch on the dash. The wiring diagrams in my FSM show a 'thermo control resistor' which is just the AC on/off switch on the dash. I just wired in a simple on/off toggle switch. Most of my AC system is from an 81 (I think) and everything matched up well with my 80 FSM.

hey thanks scottd...that picture would help me when i go to my Jyard.if the thermo switch is just that (a on/ff switch) i also took the whole climate control assembly off when my removal was done...it has a AC on/off toggle, some thing that my original controller does not have.....i was surprised, my Jyard had a 50% day off on the 1st of the year...the whole system came home for 52$..i am sure some of the stuff was not charged for.

Here is a close-up of the VSV I used for the AC:
It's the one right in the middle that has the vacuum line with the white stripe attached to it.
$52 for all of that is a good deal. I paid over $100 for all of that stuff.

Only one of the vacuum lines attaches to the carburetor.
It attaches to the fast-idle diaphragm:
The other line is just attached to a constant source of vacuum.
Mine is attached here:

thanks scottd ....pics will come in handy when my installation starts.well i went to the Jyard today and had no luck finding the VSV.
i had another question...some of the celicas have the 22r right..i wonder if the ac compressor bracket will work with the 22r toyo pick up.

You should be able to use a compressor bracket from a Celica, but it complicates things a little - I believe it is different from the compressor bracket used on the trucks.
I used the compressor bracket from an 82 Celica (my engine is an 82 22r from a Celica, but I believe the engine itself is identical to the 22r used in the trucks - all of my original 20r accessories bolted right up to it). The bracket from the Celica appears to be quite different from the one shown in my 80 FSM. It appears that the compressor attaches to the bracket differently and is closer to the engine.
I had to use a new Celica compressor as well as the belt for a Celica. I also ended up having to use the smog pump from the Celica because the 20r smog pump I had wouldn't line up correctly with the belt.

How about for the wiring inside?
I just installed the inside box but it has an M-T 6 pin electrical mount that comes from the Idle up/ down amplifier box??
Not trying to hyjack but I think this would be in play??
