74 Hilux - 18R->22R Swap, axle? brakes?
Hi all..
Long time Toyota car driver/modifier etc.. first time truck owner.. I've just paid for, but haven't got home yet, a '74 Hilux..
It's in ok (and only ok) shape cosmetically, but mechanically it needs some help.. I've got a built 20R/22R hybrid from my '75 Celica to drop in.. but am not sure how 18R->22R swaps work in trucks.. with the celicas it's just 'swap the xmember and pan and drop it in' .. Anyone know how a 22R drops into an 18R truck?
Secondly, I understand brake parts are getting hard to find for these.. (see a bunch of stuff on Rockauto.. but why not upgrade while Im at it..) and I see the PO has disconnected my rear brakes @ the MC and plugged the rear port off with a bolt (yay! bodge!) .. any feedback on easy axle/brake swaps for these? Heck, Im not even sure if it has discs or drums up front yet..
It's just intended as a reliable shop truck for the next couple years til I get my '72 Celica done.. then I can project it.. so I don't need fancy solutions, just cheap-ish easy ones
What years make up this body style? 74-77?
thanks,
Brett

I did a 18R to 20R swap a while back with a buddy of mine, worked out just fine. I'd assume a 22r would be similar. Wiring was a bear, though.
Brakes are an interesting point. I never had any trouble finding parts for my 77. I can't imagine you'd have any more trouble. Definitely get the brakes fixed and if all else fails adapt brakes from a 1979-1983 truck, IIRC they are very similar.
Hope this helps.
Here's my old 77

heh yeah, once I get it into the driveway it's not going anywhere till I get the brakes fixed.. was a bit put out when I went to test drive it today and the guys wife was like "Oh, btw, did he mention the rears are disconnected?" .. nice.
I never had any wiring drama with 18R-20/22R swaps in celicas.. so I'll hope thats the case here to.. I just dont want to get the beast of an 18R yanked out to find the 22R doesn't drop in like planned.. dont have a lot of room to work around here

I recently acquired a 77 yota. It's got solid rotor front discs. If you need me to take any pics of anything that may help with your swap, just let me know. I think 2nd gens and 3rd gens are fairly similar.
Here she is....

Hey, yours is in nice shape.. good find..
Thanks for the offer.. I think I've just found a "all the parts you can carry from it for $75" 81 parts truck.. and from other reading, spindles simply swap over and away i go..
will take some pics and details if I get 'er done..

18R Interchangeable Parts
I just bought a brand new re-manufactured 18R. It does not have any of the accessories: the intake, exhaust manifold, oil filter mount, fuelpump, water pump, etc. Are the accessories from the 20 or 22R interchangeable with the 18R? Are there any other AT besides the A43/D that will bolt up to the 18R? This Toyota power is going in a track rig so the fewer electronics the better. Thanks in advance for the input.

My guess is discs were an option thru 83, but came on almost every truck. Drums up front seem rare...
