22r with a 20r head?

So I just got a 80 toyota pickup for an old chevy corsica. The guy told me it needed a fuel pump and a carb. I get the truck home and realize it has a terrible rod knock. So i pull the motor out, and pull the head and I lost a bearing in number 2, and there was somehow a piece of metal in number 1. I know the head is toast, and I really dont want to build the motor. SO i bought a 22re knowing they are a better motor. THat one has a blown head gasket or cracked head. Then my dad and I found another 22r, but it needs something or else it wouldn't have been sitting in a field.
I also am into hot rods, and they had an article in a hot rod mag about using toyota motors in a 32 coupe. They recommended using a 22r motor with a 20r head because it flows better than the 22r head. I haven't seen that anywhere else and I'm curious to know if anybody else has tried this and had any luck. I might convert this over to 4x4 at a leter date, but currently this will be a commuter truck. I love power, but it is not NEEDED. I'm just looking for good gas mileage.
I also would like to know if I do go with this set-up, what head gasket to use. Is there is a spacer to reduce the compression ratio (as the openness of the 20r head will increase compression). If there is not a spacer,then will I need to upgrade the starter? Are there any other upgrades I should do to the motor to make it be the great reliable toyota it so desperatley wants to be? Please also keep in mind that this truck is in CA, and will have to pass smog. If I do this, I will just use the 20r valve cover, so as not to draw attention to this "hybrid".

i have one such motor in one of my pickups.

to do this swap, you'll need an early 22R bottom end, and any 20R head(if you've got power steering or a mechanical fuel pump, you want a '79-80 head). you have to use a 20R intake, and the exhaust will stay the same.

use a 22R head gasket, i like toyota's.

20R head has a combustion chamber that's just slightly larger than that of a 22R head, the part about it increasing the compression a lot is a myth.

you may have trouble getting it to smog, you'll need to retain your 20R emissions setup. definitely a good idea to leave the 20R valve cover on.

I run a stock 22r bottom with 20r head with a mild comp cam on pump gas all day long.

oops, i goofed there. it is slightly smaller, only by a couple CCs. stock 22R is 9.0:1 compression, 20R was 8.4:1 with a smaller domed piston.

Sweet. Should I run the 22r exhaust manifold or the 20r manifold? I'm new to toyota's, but they are growing on me.

if you can get a 4 to 1 header with a 2.5inch or 3inch exaust you will be very impressed for the cost

Definately go with a header if you can, but I believe the exhaust side of these motors are interchangeable, however the intake is not. 2.5-3" for exhaust is too big for a NA 4cyl, you will probably want to go 2.25" at most if you decide to upgrade exhaust.

sweet. I planned on keeping it stock, but that might be a good idea. Better flow would improve performance and mileage. Would that header be CA smog legal? Smog stuff is new to me, and frankly scares me. That's why I bought a pre-smog car.

you can get headers that will pass smog in cali it will say in their description when buying them im sure, i think headman makes one that will pass cali standards and downey might also. you also might just want to smog as soon as you get the engine in w/ the stock exhaust manifold then pop the header on there after, just an idea. also if you are going to run your exhaust your going to want 2.25" not anything bigger.

*i hear the best header for the 22r is lc engineering though. and youll just have to check with them to see if that will pass smog, im not sure.

Sweet, I've got my taxes done now, so I'm getting ready to buy the motor. I'm hoping to buy the motor and get it in by the 15th. Hoping all goes well, and that I don't get the cursed tranny issues that I hear about so often with these trucks.

with the 20r head do you use the 20r cam or the 22r? is there any diff in lift/duration?? valve springs. i have a 20r head and my buddy just had his newly bought trucks 22r head strip out a spark plug that was already helicoiled.
so off the top of your head do you know if a IM from a 20r 2x4 truck work with the 22r 4x4 carb. the 20r 2x4 IM and the 4X4 IM are diff. if not i will find out on thurs. thanks
