1st gen guys in artic cold, question!

hey guys, if you drive your 1st gen in below zero temps, does your defroster defrost the side windows? if it gets -5 or lower my side windows are 100% frosted except for the small fly windows. is this normal or is my defroster not powerful?

Slowy, cracking the window a bit speeds up the process.

Put you heater on fresh air not recirculate, and open the windows a little bit. Do you have the round defrost vents on top of your dash at the sides?

I hate how those ones at the sides on the front of the dash blow freezing air.

yeah I have the small silver dollar sized ones on top the dash they barely do anything. I think I have it on recirc? figured it uses hot air that way?

If you have it on recirculate you are circulating around the humid air in the cab and you will not defrost very well. You've got to have it on fresh to defrost windows. Also if you look up under your dash, make sure the heater tube is connected to those silver dollar size vents. I messed with my dash a bit and they had disconnected from the bottom of the vent, so I was just getting my dash nice & warm

As mentioned, you are just put the moisture back on your windows.
Also if you pop one of your heater tubes, put a shop vac to them. On older trucks you would be surprised at what critter nests you might find. Bought a used '84 Toyota truck when I was stationed in Alaska, one side defrosted fine, other side was blocked by a nest. Sucked it out and I could see out the passenger side.

Plus it is just frigging cold out my '81's heater kind of sucks.

thanks guys, I will keep it on fresh air. heat comes out of the lil defroster holes but it does not come out super hard or anything. heat will only come out of the defroster vents or lower under dash vents heat will not come out the middle vents under the radio, just cold air.

Mine does the same thing there too. Wonder what that's about. I just noticed it once it got below zero here. I don't remember those lower-center vents putting out cold air before, but maybe it just wasn't cold enough to notice.

Ya the vent under the radio and the two side vents that have the ball always just blow air from the outside. Think they are for AC if your truck came with it. I blocked the vent under the dash with cardboard behind the vent. Then stuffed the 2 side vents with garbage bags. Be surprised how much warmer your truck will be

I never had a problem in my old 82. Had better heat than my 92 diesel. Gotta make sure you got it on Fresh and on defrost. Turn the thing up wide open and it should work fine. I've grown up in the cold and on long highway drives I would always just drive in a T shirt and shut the heater motor right off and I'd be warm. I had a 195* thermostat in it as well. Must be something wrong with your trucks, or else I'm cold blooded. Our old 80 plow truck doesn't have a problem either. We use it every few days in the winter.

Not really. I park in my shop thats usually 37 degrees, let it warm up for ten minutes or so and drive across town and I still need to use the defroster setting since breath will freeze on the glass. This is in my '94, but my old '84 was the same way. Its just that cold out this time of year. In fact my rear window and back window wouldn't open today because they were frozen shut and its been warm! Well, 25 degrees instead of -10, -48 with windchill!

anything above zero and it does not even frost up, but unless you want to have ice on your dash and lap id stear clear of scraping as the frost is on the inside lol. like the guy above said, one breath can ice the window in crazy cold temps. my back window was also froze shut ha

My truck gets plenty warm, but the side "ball" vents and the lower-center vents definitely blow cold air. I know people who can handle cold weather in a t-shirt & shorts & I'm not one of them. Of course I don't consider 20 or 30 to be cold, I love those temps, it's the highs around 4 or -4 and lows around -17 that have me cranking the heat.

I have a garage and it's very dry out here, so I haven't had a chance to really test how well my side vents defrost my side windows, but so far this winter, no problems. I may have to try blocking off those center vents though anyways. The ball vents I can just shut off by turning sideways so I'm not worried about those, but it would be nice to block off the center ones.

95yoda, I'm in Fort Frances, ON. Just north of International Falls, MN. We just finished a frame repair job on the 80 cause it broke in half plowing for the 3rd time. It gets used everyday and gives lots enough heat.

The temps here for the last two weeks haven't gotten above 0*F until yesterday when we got a major warm spell that warmed it up to 32*F. It gets good and cold here too don't worry. The lows were -20 to -30. I never had a problem with cold coming out my side ball shaped vents as long as I had them shut tight and pulled out on them a bit to seal them up. And the middle vents didn't seem to leak cold in. Just always left it on either defrost or floor and never moved it from fresh. Guess I got lucky enough to have a good warm one. It heated up better than the diesel I've got now does. Gotta find out whats wrong with it.
