I recently purchased a 1981 toyota 4wd sr5 and it has a electric fuel pump and I was wondering if this was a factory setup or was this added by the previous owner. It has the original 1981 22r engine with the carb. Here are some pics

When I bought this truck the engine was in the bed and the guy had the drive shaft tied up with what looked like a speaker wire but it actually ended up being the fuel pump wire (its the yellow and brown wires in the pic). I can hook these up straight up to the battery and get the truck to run but im concerned about getting too much fuel. Did this truck come like this or could he have put a fuel injected tank and/or fuel pump on it? And if this is a factory setup, where do these wires hook up to? My fsm doesnt show a wiring diagram for an electric pump on this early of a truck.

not stock .. fuel pump should be a mechanical pump on the engine .. just in front of the intake

So, the truck runs with the electric fuel pump.. You can put a fuel regulator on the fuel inlet side of the carb, adjust it to about 3 pounds and fine tune from there. Regulators are available at local auto parts stores.
If you decide to run a mechanical pump then you MAY have to change the fuel pickup in the tank. I'm not familiar with the electric pump to say bypass it.
Maybe someone else can chime in on this...

not to call all of you out, but look on the head directly in front of the intake. if there is a block off plate there then you can put a manual pump. if the head was cast with this area solid then it is one of the trucks that came factory equipped with an electric pump that ran from the key switch through a relay. any excess fuel would just be returned to the tank.

NoT on an /81 truck -- unless the head has been changed with a celica head , as well then it would not have the P/S bosses either + it would not be "factory " wired .. thats one way you could tell

that pump and bracket actually looks like a 91 ish fuel sender and guage float .. maybe the tank was swapped ?

I dropped the tank to get a look at the fuel pump and thats when I noticed a plate that was made to adapt what must be a newer tank to this truck. Newer tanks must be shorter. I removed the elec pump and modified the pickup for the time being so I could install a mechanical pump. I'll replace the whole tank and pickup at a later time. The original wiring harness has two wires, one goes to the gauge but what is the other one? a ground?

I just posted as I just replaced the tank in my 83, I found it real difficult to find a replacement tank, for my 83, I ended up buying an 84 tank, new for $143, thinking at the very least I could rig something up to mount it in the stock location, turns out it was an exact fit.

So chock one up to luck, but when you go to replace the tank this might help.

I appreciate the help guys. I'll definitely keep that bit of info in mind angrydogtattoo thanks. I have a few other bugs to work out with this truck but it's up and running enough to drive everyday so that's what I'm gonna do.
