1981 Chinook - Opening a can of worms...

Hi every one...

First time poster here....

I recently bought a tired old Chinook... and mean tired...

The tires and the fuel tank held, but everything else leaks bad...

The truck actually ran pretty good and has been my daily driver for the last month... requiring daily top-offs of ALL FUILDS...

That was until yesterday...

Yesterday, the thing overheated... and started chugging clouds of pure white smoke out the exhaust pipe...

I tried staring it after it cooled down and I re-filled the radiator... but it only ran for a moment and like crap, so I shut her off and towed her home...

Which brings me to the creation of this thread...

I want to fix my truck, but I am not sure what is the best approach...

I am leaning twds a crate engine from .. somewhere?! (?!)

But I have also wondered if there is a DIESEL engine that will fit my truck... I would love a turbo diesel in that thing...

But maybe I should just rebuild the engine I have...

So.. let me hear some of your thoughts and comments...

I'll leave you with a few pictures of the rig...

Cheers...

Thanks for the reply...

I will eventually bring this truck to tip top shape, but right now it needs to RUN...lol...

Do you (or anyone) know which model of engine is the most desirable for the conversion?

If I am going with a reman engine, I would prefer it to be a diesel...

Thanks!

Yeah, I want one now...that thing is cool..got any interior pics?

As for the engine, the older diesels that the toyotas ran were not very powerful, yeah it would be cool to have, but you arent going to get the power you want from them, plus parts in the US are rare and expensive!

If I was you I would rebuild the 22r and upgrade it a little bit, you know little stuff like a header and RV cam!

So you vote for the 22r rebuild eh?!

I am not looking for power... I just want the truck to run good...

The 22r is no power house either... but it mos the truck right along...lol...

I'll snap some pic of the interior for you tomorrow... It's ragged out though...

The guy I bought it from rode it hard and put it away wet.. then it sat for years...

Thanks for the thought...

That is a gasoline engine right?

And I am not sure, but would it be a bolt on mod?

If I stay with gas, I'll stick with the 22r... it's a little weak, but plenty for my daily driving...

The idea of having a diesel engine is the possibility of running veggie oil on long trips...

But from what I see, the small. older diesel engines are rare... and I need a truck I can maintain... it gets used, it's not for show...lol...

So, if I decide to go with the 22r, I am thinking of just ordering a crate engine and having a shop do the job...

What do you guys say about that?

I need the truck to run...lol..

What would be a good source for an rebuilt r22?

Thanks!

No, The 2.7 is Gas.

It came in the 95.5-04 Taco's and 96-02 4 Runners..
It's a bretheren of the 22R.
Its got 16V heads and DOHC with 150HP on tap..

Will bolt right up to a W56 with a gear drive case..

Not a terribly hard swap.

CLAMPY !!!

Good luck

Nice, I've always wanted to build a 4wd Chinook. My Father had a couple (2wd) and they made great hunting rigs, I think if I get tired of my hi top van I'll get one. I'm sure your interior is pretty beat up, they're made pretty crappy, but if you strip it and start over you can make them pretty nice.
Have you checked out

There's some pretty nice trucks and ideas there.
Good luck with the rebuild

I love mine... people sometimes think I am crazy, but I hope this is the last truck I ever buy...

You know, as far as old RV interiors go, I would say this is a 6 out of ten...

The doors are ripped off the cabinets, the interior lights don't work, the seat cushions came from an old couch...

But other than that... the stove works, the seat/bed is solid... and the pop up top hasn't leaked so far...

Which brings me to the idea of just sealing it in the down and locked position... fiberglassing it over to MAKE SURE there are no leaks EVER ...lol...

I'm gonna need luck locating the CASH...

I intend on having a professional actually do the work...

I have rebuild piston aircraft engines before, but I have never worked on a truck, or a car for that matter...

I don't have the tools or the place to do it in...

So this is going to be an effort in locating cash, parts and a reliable mechanic in the greater Anchorage area..

All right.. so, knowing that I know nothing about Toyotas.. or cars and trucks for that matter..lol... I know that I am opening a can of worms here...

So.... My guess would be that when I switch to a diesel, I will need more than just the engine right???

And how about the legal side of say.. buying an engine in Canada, and have it installed in my truck in Alaska? is it even an issue with a vehicle that is almost 30 years old?

I'll be taking some pictures of the truck here shortly, so stay tuned...

Cheers... and thanks for all the rplies.. I appreciate the help...

Well. I was afraid it would just make more sense to keep the gasoline engine... darn it... oh well...

I paid US$1500 for it... plus an oil change and tune up at the local speedy lube shop..lol...

Not too bad, but I really wish it had waited another month before it puked it's guts...

So... now I need to find a reputable engine shop...

Or... would I be better off to buy a crate/remanufactured engine?

anyways...

Here are the pictures I promised.. sorry for the mess... it's the dog's truck really.. not mine...lol..

Cheers...
