30 day warranty from a suburu guy? wow that is not very generous IMO...not saying the price is bad, kind of mixed on it
Oregon Engine Rebuilders has a lifetime unlimited mileage warranty...I know you are limited on space /tools etc...but here is a long block for $995

sorry to hear that American 4x4 is gone...I think they rebuilt my '84 engine and redid my f/r diffs for about $2600, of course that was 93...Transmission went out 10 miles out side of Eagle River when I was moving to New York in February of '94 (frigging cold), they put another transmission in for me for $600...had me back on the road by 2 the same day
overall you gotta do what you gotta do...

But if I find a reputable shop in my visit, I will probably go with them...
I like dealing locally, with small businesses...

I usually retail this for 2G .. + install .. so I think your in the ballpark , as long as you get writen warenty , and its built by a reputable shop .

I think this guy's honest... his shop is in Eagle River, a small community in the "greater Anchorage" district... and you don't survive in a small town by doing bad business...
And when I spoke to him on the phone.... he assured me that I would get a top notch professional re-build with all new parts, and inspection of case and all that jazz....
But it's the word of a stranger who wants my money...lol....
But I am not about to start a re-engineering project...lol...
I'll deal with the rebuild on the 22r, and hope for the best...
In a couple of years this truck should be in tip top shape... ready for adventure...

So I am still here...lol...
The truck is still down...lol...
But I am getting closer to making it a priority...
I am thinking of re-building the entire drive train...
from engine to wheels...
any ideas on what I can expect a shop to quote me?

i know you're set on just rebuilding or goin original.. but i would go with the 3rz. its a 2.7 4 cylinder bolts right up they only kinda hard stuff would be setting up the fuel delivery, rerouting the exhuast and electrical. Easiest thing to do would be replacing the 22r though..

In my eyes, the only thing that would be worth modifying the truck for, would be a diesel...
And that is not totally out of the question...
but it will highly depend on who I end up hiring to do the job...
Most likely though.. I will re-build what I have and be happy for the next 200K miles...

Cool old truck, needs some work for sure. That front suspension is definitely sagged out, must have or have had a serious oil leak judging by the amount of oil and crap on the frame/axle up front.
Figure out if its really worth putting money into, take a look at the frame and the cab floor for rust. Since its a 4x4 Chinook, that alone would make me want to get it up and running mint.

The frame is pretty solid...
The suspension and drive train have been "rode hard and put away wet"...
I bought the truck and got the last 1K miles it had to give...
I honestly would rather fix her up than buy a new truck...
It's the perfect "bachelor + dog in AK" vehicle...lol...

I just found your thread. I would sit down and weigh out the cost/benefit of each swap or rebuild after you have done all of the research. There's a ton that you can do to a 22r before putting it back in, but it won't be like having a 3rz engine.
That is a unique truck/RV, and it's worth it to keep it going.

You could have bought a small tool kit and rebuilt that thing yourself by now.
I like your little Chinook. Wish I could find one with 4X4. I guess Subaru Dave didn't work out.

Looks like a fun project.
I also picked up a Chinook, but it's a 2wd. A 4wd would have been awesome.
I've had mine parked for a year. Only driven it a few times after I got everything sorted out in the engine. I need to coat the wheel wells in something because there is some surface rust I need to deal with.

I like the idea of simple...lol...

BUT I REALLY like the idea of a diesel... and would actually consider it if I could get it done under 4 grand...
But it just SOUNDS like a giant headache and hassle paying a shop to LEARN how to the job... can't imagine there are many "22r to diesel" conversions around..
..
So if no diesel, it seems natural to me to go stock...
...
If you have any suggestions to offer, I would GLADLY consider them....
But I do not know enough to try and re-invent the wheel here..

If you're gonna stick with the 22R you should definitely do it yourself if you have the tools and an alternate ride for a couple weeks while you're doing the work. Its loads of fun and really easy, especially if you're getting a crate engine.
