The old bearings look like they've seen more than a little coolant in their day.

Oil pan debris: driver's timing guide, timing cover pieces, tensioner spring, tensioner damper pad and what appears to be a plumbing o-ring. It was probably dropped into the oil filler hole at a quick-lube place.

Napa tensioner that comes with the really cheap timing kit. Avoid.

Didn't have a tensioner anymore and it still started and ran! The timing would jump about 25 degrees at random.

Similar thing to yours happened to my engine but didn't blow a hole through the piston yet.

This is how clean you're trying to get it. Some of the gasket texture will stay on the block unless you get it machined. If you do that, remember to bring the timing cover!

Right after I peeled the gasket off. I also wiped it down with a rag, so I don't have a true 'before' pic.

Doesn't it look like the set on the right was installed wrong? The non-tabbed one has all the wear on back instead of the side with the oil grooves like the rest of em. A sure sign that this poor 22re was assembled either Monday or Friday...

This is after I sanded them with 400 grit. Do they look safely reusable?

Didn't take a before pic, but you could hardly see light through it.

This is what life looks like when you have no garage or even a decent place to keep this outside. It's way smaller when folded.

The napa bolts are very generic looking and don't have a grade stamped on them, so no clue what they're made out of. Engnbldr's at least let you know they're 10.9 bolts.

Old head bolts purchased from napa a few years back. 4 were coated in oil when I pulled them.

Old head bolts from napa, with corrosion on some theads. I'm using new ones from engnbldr just to be on the safe side.

Found the tensioner arm just lying at the bottom of the cover. It boldly took on the job of chain damper for awhile before it shot outta there like someone gave it the heimlich! I'll see the spring tomorrow when I pull the pan.

Typical broken driver's guide. It's not really the guides fault... let's move on to the tensioner; What's left of it anyway.

This cylinder was still firing and holding 135psi somehow. Combustion gases were passing into the next cylinder.

All combustion chambers look bad with crispy burnt valves, but #4 was by far the worst. Is that damage all from detonation? There was nothing in there there that would cut into metal like that.

Pulled the head to find crappy fel-pro gasket. It was letting oil and coolant into the combustion chambers after only 40k miles.
