I'm just wondering what is a reasonable amount of time for a shop to complete a SAS. My 4runner went in on Oct 10 and the parts were ordered then. They got there by the 20th. How many days should I give the shop before I start bugging.

 

Depends on the shop. I'd say anywhere from 3-4 months to a year.

I'm being half serious too.

Keep in touch with them, visit to see progress, but don't expect to get it back soon or on time.

Two answers on this.

First, how long did they say when you dropped the rig? If a time frame wasn't mentioned then, then you have little recourse on however long it actually takes.

Second, it's done when it is done. If no time frame was specified in early quotes and you didn't say it needed to be out of a special event later, plan on waiting.

Depending on what truck and how exotic you are going, it should be between 35 and 60 hours of work as a guestimate. If all the parts are there and that is all they work on, that should take a little more than a week. That never happens though.

I spent 4.5 months waiting to get an engine swap done that was supposed to take 4 weeks. I was ready to come with a flatbed and the sheriff to get the truck out.

Tell them you want it as soon as is possible. Ask what has to happen for that to occur. Tell them you would like updates weekly even if it is just a call to say they hit a snag. Stay open and communicate.

 

I talked with the shop today and they said they had the front almost done. The shop said it took him a bit to cut off all the IFS and that they had to grind the burrs quite alot. He said that the rear won't take as long and to keep checking in every 3-4 days or so. Thanks for the help.

 

I dropped my truck off friday night and drove it home from the shop Sunday night. Everything done but the front driveshaft.

 

THAT is an insanely fast turnaround

 

AJ at bentup did mine basically in a day...we started at 6:30 am. He did the cutting/grinding/welding, I did the axle rebuilds, then we both put it together.

we were done that night at 2:30am.

came back the next day to mount the rear shocks and drove it home

it was a long day to say the least.

 

AJ at bentup did my buddy's in a weekend, IIRC. it was only the front swap though. it all depends on the shop and their priorities and work ethic.

 

I did a swap from a Friday at about 2:00 to Monday at about 7:00PM. That was with alot of help with grinding on Saturday, and we did not work late any night (not after 10:00). We had planned to do it in 4 days, alot of Monday was spent running around to get a brakeline made (someone cut one w/ a grinder), and to get the driveshaft made.

Your best bet would have been to get the parts before you took it to the shop.

 

A bud and me did the front in 3 days and the rear in about 2 and a half.

 

AJ was also featured in an issue of 4WD Toyota Owner magazine doing a SAS in one day, even when the power went out at the shop.

 

6 months for my fab guy. He worked on it after work for hobby.

 

I can do one in 3 days if I'm lazy

 

I started mine a friday at 6pm and was done sunday morning. I had 3 other guys helping me though.

 

How fast a shop does it as a priority.

How fast a shop does it in the background.

How fast one guy does it.

How fast one guy does it when he has to drive it Monday.

These are all grossly different time frames with no factor for rig, late model is slower, suspension, links are harder or variables.

If you took it to a shop and didn't set or ask for a deadline, plan on waiting awhile.
