What stops you from putting in a TURBOCHARGED 3.8 from the Regal T-Type/Grand National? The added plumbing for the turbo would be around the same difficulty as to put in a 7MGTE (Supra turbo) and there are already kits out to put a buick v6 in the toyota!!! Wow, that would be sweet...those engines made crazy factory hp, you can definitely get more out of a GN than a Supra....it has that extra .8L as well....

 

That sounds like a cool project. I've never seen pics of this engine in a Toyota engine bay but I have seen GM 4.3 V6 pics and that engine fits pretty nice.

 

I talked to somebody about that before and I remember him telling me that the buicks tend to have a lot of overheating problems when swapped in a Toyota. :pat:

 

Well maybe an aftermarket radiator, fan, and a lower temp thermostat would fix that?

 

i dont think u are correct with getting more power out of the Buick than a supra. the supra internals can handle nearly 1000 HP, now if thats not strong enough then i dont know what is. i would much rather have a toyota engine in my toyota then a Buick/GM motor in my toyota. you know it will be more reliable and that supra engine can handle mass amounts of power off stock internals.

First of all, the 7MGTE can really only make/handle around 600-700hp max without massive changes and huge turbos. The 2JZ (I think?) twin turbo in the 4th gen supras can make 1000hp, but not the easier-to-swap-in 7mgte. I still think the buick will make more hp and far more torque for less money that it would cost to make a supra engine (not twin turbo...noone has swapped one in a toyota yet, anyway, so they don't count ) as powerful. The buicks made near 300hp from the factory, they were very underrated.

 

ahhh yes, i was thinking the 2JZ, but also why swap toyota reliability with Buick/GM reliability (or lack there of).
granted the extra power would be nice, but when you get up into 500+ HP then its basically just a drag truck, and much more mods would be in order.

I was only thinking about it because I like how larger-displacement engines sound. I love the sound of a 4.6/5.0 in a mustang or a 5.7 in a T/A.

 

Why go to the trouble? The 3.4l with a supercharger makes near 300hp. Buick stoped making those 3.8l motors AND the turbo back in '87. Call me foolish, but I would much rather have my 2002 Supercharged Toyota motor than a 16 year old oil leaker ffom GM.

 

I used to work for GM corporate and the specs on these thing were just a bit off. They were dynoing these things from the factory and getting between 4 and 5 hundred horses out of them with minor mods. These blocks are also used or were, in indy cars totally stock. Seeing as where the power comes on I don't know if the stock running gear would take it. The real power hits at about 1800 rpm and climbs seady from there. The GNX's were even more fun. It would be a great thing to see all four wheels spinning on a four runner though. I say do it.

 

Has anyone thought about putting in a 4.3L turbo? You know, they were in the GMC Cyclones and GMC Typhoons...Since there's a kit for the NA 4.3L, wouldn't it be *fairly* simple to do the 4.3L turbo? Just a thought for you all to ponder.

I dont know this first hand, but i have read somewhere that the motor mounts were diferrent on those two engines.
Then take into account intercooler , piping ect.

 

The 3.8L could make upwards of 400hp, though. Plus it would be cheaper than a 3.4L. Plus I'd have to swap engines anyway so might as well go for the most bang for my $.
