questions on installing an sr5 gauge cluster
ok heres the situation, i got an sr5 gauge cluster and sending unit at the local junkyard, installed the sending unit and plugged it up, no problem. took out the old cluster cleaned up the new one and plugged it in, ok this seemed WAY too easy and was going to smooth. turn on the truck to check that the gauges work, heres where the problems start. the tach doesnt move at all the oil pressure gauge doesnt move at all, the temp gauge instantly goes to overheated and the fuel guage goes above full, and my tank is almost empty. can anyone help me trouble shoot the problems i am having, i did a search on here and didnt really come up with anything, i am assuming that the tach wire may have to be run directly into the dash which wont be a real big problem once i figure out which wire it is and where it goes, but any ideas on the other gauges? is this cluster pretty much shot?
any help would be appreciated
thanks

my truck is an 89 4runner it came out of the same year just an sr5 i put my factory cluster back in and the factory sending unit and all works fine, the 4runner i took the cluster out of was definately a 4 cyl, i remember that it had the cylinder head off and only saw 4 pistons. so i am pretty confused right now

Me thinks:
1) Something about the plug wasn't in right.
2) Gauge set is dead. There is a procedure for checking the gauges in the FSM. It's pretty easy... I've never head of an 1989 that's not setup for a tach. The input is on the ignitor.

so should i try to plug it back in and wiggle the wires a little bit and see if that helps? and not to sound like a jackass but what is an fsm? factory service manual?

Actually, the guages didn't change at all over the later 80s, I spent a good bit of time troubleshooting a few months ago. Its a straighforward exchange...
To have so many issues with your system, there must have been something catastrophic done to that junkyard cluster. Those movements in there are pretty fragile...

Just did the swap in my 89 and the only issue should be with the oil sender needing changed out. My oil pressure gauge was bad and needed swapped so the troubleshooting stuff in the FSM helps a bunch. Not sure the year truck the sr5 gauge came from, but it didn't seem to matter anyway. Not sure how much time I'll have this evening, but I might be able to scan in a couple pages from the 89 FSM to help put you in the right direction. I'd also suggest watching for an FSM on ebay, I think i paid $60 for mine and it's worth every penny.

well i thank you all for the input, i guess its best to just assume that the cluster is shot, i hoped that would not be the case but seems it is looking that way
thanks again for those of you who gave me input, i will try and search out ways to test it before i give up all hope

If you can take pics of the back of both clusters in enough detail, I can take a look and see if the dash connectors need the wires moved around. It's not common, but I have heard of it happening. Most are plug and play, although it's about 50/50 on the tach working. Usually you have to run a wire from the (-) side of the coil.

1 question.
Do both vehicles havet he same transmission (e.g., both autos or 5spds)?
The wiring pinout at the big connector is totally different for the 2 trannies. I.e., a cluster from a 5 spd will not plug right into an auto truck. Nothing wil lwork. I know this from experience.
You can make it work by removing the wires from the pins and putting them in the correct place.
Good luck.

that must be the problem then, i went and got another cluster, went to put it in today and the exact same problems, identical, my truck is auto and both donor trucks were stick shift, does anyone know the pin config and how i would change it? i would greatly appreciate it
thanks again for all the help
