Dilemma: I have both 231mm and 199mm calipers, what to use...

Ok, here's my situation, I have 2 sets of Tundra calipers:

Set one: 199mm OEM Tundra calipers w/ 60k on them.

Set two: 231mm OEM Tundra calipers, brand new, already with new OEM pads.

Now should I
  • A) Sell the 231mm calipers, buy a caliper rebuilding kit, rebuild the 199mm calipers, and buy OEM pads. Ending up with the easier installation.
  • B) Sell the 199mm calipers and install the ready to go 231mm calipers. Ending up with the harder installation.

What would YotaTech do?

Thanks for the help

I read on here ealier that the 231's require quite a bit of trimming of both the caliper and the wheel to get them to fit. That was with the stock wheel. The 199's didn't require trimming iirc. I would use the 199's unless you have a really heavy truck and actually need the bigger ones.

As the one who did and wrote up the 231 mods, I did not have to do alot of trimming. Less than 20 minutes per side and it was easy. I have come to find that many of the post '98 16" wheels fit with no trimming required. The wheels in UNR.GRD's avatar do not need to be trimmed.

Thanks for the advice, I'm still not sure which way to lean. I guess one of my main concerns is rebuilding the 199mm calipers, what exaclty is involved and the difficulty level? BTW, I'll be switching to LX450 wheels soon...

I honestly don't think you'll really feel much of a difference with either choice. So the choice is more of a mental or bragging rights type of issue rather than performance (except if you do alot of heavy towing). The 199mm calipers, even at 60K, unless there was heavy rusting or alot of water in the brake fluid, will probably be fine for at least another 60k miles so they probably can be used without any rebuilding (just put some fluid in the bore and make sure it slides in and out easily). But since you have both, I'd try the new pair of 231mm calipers and test fit a wheel (don't forget to check your spare tire!)......if it doesn't need any trimming, then just keep those....if it does, then just put the 199mm pair on and sell the others. Either way you'll be able to sell the calipers you don't use fairly easily.

w/ the LX wheels, you will have to trim the 199's to clear them. with that said, you might as well have the 231's if you just want them since you'll be grinding the calipers down anyway. however, i don't see any practical benefit to them other than more pad thickness.
