Swapping A 3.0 Yota Motor For A 4.0 Jeep Motor
#1
Hey all , i had a question . Is it possible to swap out a 3.0 v6 from a YOTA for a JEEP 4.0 inline 6 ? Or is the compartment to small for the JEEP motor. Something i was cosidering , but just wanted some input.

Anything is possible, but not recommended. If you are serious an ax15 jeep tranny is made by asin the same manufacturer of toyota's trannies. It shares many similarities as the "r" trannies, so a bellhousing might swap making things easier
your cleanest swap will be a 3.4L, this will have the least amount of fab work

... not to mention an I-6 is the smoothest running engine, three sets of pistons 120* apart makes it super smooth.... and torquey.... its a low rpm motor thou, doesnt like to rev as high as toyota 6cyls... 3.73 and 31's is really low geared on one of those motors for hwy driving...

I have to agree with the torqueness and reliability of the 4.0 I-6 I drove one (my parents) for a couple of years, it had a 5 speed and 4.10 gears, put it in low range it felt like it would just idle up the side of a house, also my family put over 250k miles on it before it was sold that person put on another 125k on it after he bought it the engine was still strong, but the rest of the drive train gave out all at once, yes all (tranney, x-fer, frount axel, rear axel) at the same time, if (not likely love my truck to much) I was to look for a post 90's jeep I would only look at the ones with a 4.0.
But as for a transfer into a toy not something I would do myself due to the length of the engine ( if I rember right the cherokee has more space between the firewall and the radiator support) as well as other things(adapting, fabing, eletrical) to make it all work and be reliable.

I always here about jeeps having engine problems, mostly simple stuff like the sensors and stuff, but there still problems that could leave you stranded mile's from home. If your looking for a little more power for your yota you may want to think about the 3.4 toyota V6. Lots more power then the 3.slow, and the coil packs that replace the distributor are much more reliable in the water situations that we sometimes find ourselves in. And the entire swap is much easier since the majority of the stuff bolt's and plugs right in.

the 4.0 belongs in a Jeep, unless you REALLY
mean the 4.0V8 lexus mill.
I had to replace my wifes 4.0 in her 93 cherokee I was surprized how much pep it had. Good engine bad cooling, I sell alot of water pumps for those.

4.0
i just got rid of my xj 4.0 to come to yotas..ive had 2 jeeps w/4.0's. great motors when they're running....they will nickle and dime you to death. i agree the tourque was great, and when it was running it was probably one of the best motors ive had. there were problems in the vaccume lines all the time, water pump problems, and electrical grimlins out the yin yang..now having said that, both were from an 88 (w/120k when got rid of it) and a 91(162K). not many miles, well maintained, and my cousin has a 96 which is always goin out on him. if your hell bent on gettin one, go w/ a later like 99 or up, think once they ditched the renix units (after 91) they got progressivly better, but still had problems w/ water and fuel pumps. hope i could help some, ive driven lots of 4x4's and none are better than yotas IMHO.
