Stupid question: what size D ring shackles to buy?

I have decided to start piecing together a recovery gear package. For starters: either a 2x20 strap or a 2x30. Not sure on that one yet, input appreciated. What size shackles should I be purchasing to go with these straps?

3/4" seem to be the most popular.

I see some of the next size down around sometimes.

3/4" is the most popular. 5/8" is also used sometimes.

3/4" is what most bumpers have holes for.... they are plenty strong and seem to be the universal size

If you get a TJM for a first gen, the holes in the mounting brackets have to be reamed out a little for the 3/4 shaft to fit through, FYI.

You can see mine in my Jaws 1 pic in my avatar to see what hole I'm talking about. The winch cable goes from the fairlead to the shackle attached to the bumper mount brackets.

I have 3/4"ers for the front, but I have a 7/8" for the one in my hitch.

!/2" or 3/4" diameter shackles will work fine, just make sure the piece that encloses the shackle (whatever diameter that may be) is a solid 1/4" thick or more. That way you'll actually have some a substantial weld surface area between the shackle mount and the bumper. This is of course, assuming you have an aftermarket bumper and aren't using a hitch style mounted shackle.
peace.

i seriously hope you dont hook your 3" tree saver to your snatch block with a 1/2" shackle for a double line pull (40' away) and then stall your 9K winch...

That's a potential trip-wrecker...

Check the WLL (Working Load Limit) stamped into the shackle. They need to be rated AT LEAST twice the weight of the truck. My 5/8" are rated at 7tons IIRC. I also carry some 3/4" shackles too.

I get them at Tractor Supply. While you're there, pick up a length of Sched 70 transport chain with grab hooks in addition to your tree strap and recovery strap.

I have 3/4" in mine. 86Original, I guess they changed the TJMs because they fit just fine on mine. Actually, the holes measure 7/8" but it looks like it would be too tight to actually fit a 7/8" shackle (I couldn't find any locally anyway). Both Northern and Tractor Supply have them. Also, you can use water heater hose to bush the shackles so they don't rattle (just cut a couple pieces for either side of the bracket). Since my mounts are so low (just like 86Original's avatar; I don't know if you can see them in mine) I cut the hose so they are tight enough to stay in the up position. I heard nary a peep out of them all weekend (actually, I heard my bumper vibrate against my fender on some fast washboard roads but nothing from my shackles). Hope this is helpful...
