I have been searching with no luck to see if anyone has put a diesel into a 3rd gen 4Runner. I read that the 03 Hilux's had a diesel, but where those TURBO diesels??? I live in Mexico(I'm from Georgia, USA) and I see Hilux's everyday but i have never seen a diesel one. Does anyone know if the Diesel Hilux's were sent out of Japan?

I think that the 2lt and 3lt have been swapped into a number of vehicles. If you're asking if they came that way from the factory, I dunno...

yes the 3rd gen wa savailable with a diesel. it is a 4 cyl 3L turbio diesel. i think it was called the hilux surf ssr. only thing is i think they are all right hand drive.

 

It was called the 1kz-te and came in overseas 3rd gen 4Runners. It's the motor to have.

 

Toyota did ship several diesel engine types to just about every place except North America, apparently had to do with issues with smog laws in cali,NY and a few other states and also the generally poor quality of fuel available in NA. My research has led me to believe that Mexico was lumped in to the same "Market Region" as US/CAN. You can get diesel yota's in South America and certain Central American countries I believe. You might try looking up Toyota dealers on the internet in say Panama, Columbia, Chile, etc. You could probably drive it up if you wanted an adventure or ship it by coast boat.
On the otherhand if you want to do a repower there is a company in Texas that imports whole front ends from Japan and does swaps, reasonable prices too as I recall.

Maybe we'll get a new diesel with the mandate for low-sulfer fuel. I'd buy one.

 

They have em here in Afghanistan... I am trying to figure out how to brink one of the older 4door hiluxs home.. its the same frame/susp as my 92 so all my goodies would bolt up

 

it is impossible to legally bring in any diesel unless it is 25 yrs old. a motor swap on the other hand is a grey area. obd2 cars can be converted easier than pre obd cars. it is still a grey area though.

 

Many states are adopting the "California method" of smog control. To make an engine swap legal you have to 1) use an engine that was emissions certified for that particular state, 2) it must be the same year engine or newer than the vehicle and 3) all the engine's original smog equipment must be intact. A 1kz-te swap would never work in CA for these reasons.

if toyota offered a diesel in the new 4runners, id find a wrecked one and pull the engine and put it in my 3rd gen. nothing like that diesel sound!!!

anyone know the Texas' cutoff smog check? im sure its more tolerable than CA, but need to know the exact numerical number.

 

25 yrs old iirc. or OBD2. all they do is plug it in.

 

That's why I love Arizona, NO smog test needed unless you live in the 2 big cities Phoenix (Metro area) and Tucson. But keep it a sectete we don't want all of those California yuppys coming here.

It should be a fairly easy swap. There's no clearence issues to worry about, the transmission is the same as the 5VZ and if you get the front clip (probably the only way you can buy this swap), you can get the bigger radiator, hoses and requisite engine mounts to make it a smooth install.

Basically, from what I've seen, the only issues are the fuel pump's removal, wiring the ECU, making a custom down pipe to the cat and welding in the engine mounts. I'm sure you can even find someone to make you custom mounts to make the engine a bolt in affair. Hell, a few years ago, putting an SR20 into a 240 was beyond the reach of most, now every bandwagoning drift/ricer has it. All it takes is a few people to do it and make it easy...

The Prado version is intercooled, netting even more power. But you could easily add a small front mount w/easy to source hard pipe to any 1KZ swap. I believe there's also performance chips available in the Australian market, too.

I can't think of a better engine for the Horunner. Start making biodiesel and you could have paid for the swap and biodiesel equipment in less than 5 years! All while gaining a stronger engine, better fuel economy and more power...

I wouldn't even bother doing it in emissions states, though.

My understanding is that several manufacturers are looking at it but along with the low-sulpher diesel change there is also the new emissions laws in 2007 and [2010/11?] as well. The 2007 change is why you can't buy a new 2006 [or 2007] VW diesel car the only ones available are the left-over 2005s.
I think VW is bringing them back in mid'07 as '08s after the low-sulpher d is available.

As to the Texas conversion company thye seem to have all the legal crap sorted out. They can be found in one of the diesel conversion threads here someplace.

Importing an existing complete vehicle... my understanding is so long as it can meet the smog standards from the manufacturer for that model/year of truck then it can be brought in if the original model was imported as a truck.

If it was imported as a car then you are SOL because different rules apply for them, that being said if you were going to run it on bio-d only than you might be able to fanagle some kind of 'experimental vehicle' import licence if you set up a corporation to own the vehicle. But then you would have some pretty onnerous documentaion requirements and you'd probably have to install some fancy monitoring gear to sell it to Arnie's
E-stormtroopers.

 

Texas does not have emission testing for diesel vehicles, They require a "safety-only" inspection.

 

No smog inspections here in Iowa. I wonder how that diesel would run on biodiesel?
