clutch possibly going out?

i have an 88 22re 5sp pickup. when i try to start it, it feels like the clutch is engaged and the truck will lurch forward while starting it if i try to start it in first. if i try starting it in reverse, it crawls backwards as i try to start it. it goes into gear extremely hard, and the clutch is at the end of its freeplay adjustment. is a new clutch in order?

im no expert on it but it kind of sounds like its going out. do you smell anything bad from that area? when youre driving, put it in third and around 30 mph floor it and see if it slips or anything. does the pedal seem stiffer when youre pressing it to start the truck? are oyu pushing the pedal all the way to the floor? it sounds like the clutch isnt fully engaging and the starter is giving your drivetrain some torque

Try bleeding the clutch slave cylinder first...

yea sounds like the clutch slave is going out...which is slowly letting the clutch hit the pressure plate...if it was going out you would have the oppisite effect you would let the clutch out and would not go anywhere very fast

there is no smell coming from the area, and the only noises i can hear are when i try and downshift to 2nd and it wont go into gear, grinding the gears instead.

my clutch pedal is entirely freeplay basically, it can't engage the way it used to because it hits the firewall before it can go in far enough to shift smoothly.

think it could be my slave cylinder?

either that or you have air in the system try and bleed it first if that dosent work its either the slave or the master more than likely the slave...either way its less than 100 to replace both

acutally i had that because the previous owner of my truck replaced the clutch with a cheap one and a peice actually broke of the disc and was floatign around in there making it engage just my .02 but it sound like a master or slave thign to me too

this is a good test. at speed press it in, throttle poisition stays the same so rpm's increase, release the clutch and you should feel it grab. if so clutch is in ok or better condition.
dont try this until you have bled the system first.
