So my left front inside CV Boot just broke open spraying loads of grease everywhere. (connects right under engine so i'm assuming that's the inside boot and not the outside)

I hear these things go out after about 10yrs or so so it's my time. So next monday i'm planning to pull the entire front left axle out to replace the boot. Probably end up replacing the other boot as well if it needs it. So anyone fixed a CV Boot themselves and want to give me some help with part names and number, where to buy the parts, and some procedure tips? Anything will help!

 

most people find it easier to replace the whole CV then just the boot. it cost a little more, but its easier, and you dont have to worry about the CV going bad. $70 at autozone wiht unlimited lifetime warranty.

 

It's easier and not much more $$ to just buy a rebuilt axle. Don't forget a 10 year old boot contains a 10 year old joint which going by Murphy's Law will probably fail soon after you put the new boot on.

 

I've got an axle sitting in the trunk of my car as I type this. $69.99 from Advance auto parts. Shop around because they will price match. I paid $49.99 for this one.

 

if you can get the same deal as lockngo, replace the other side as well. dont need to meet murphy!

well thanks all for the advice. i think i'll definitely replace the whole front cv axle; much less of a pain. i'll check out the other one tonight to see if that side has any fractures in the rubber and decide if it'd be best to replace that one too. I just don't want to get ahead of myself and start putting a bunch of money into an older car, just to have something major fail in the near future.

so what is this part called exactly? i'm looking at autozone and can't figure out which thing it is. At Advanced it's $100 bucks for one which doesn't sounds like what you guys were talking about. how bout some links...

 

Do yourself the Favor and pound the studs out and replace with nuts and bolts it will make your life so much easier the next time you need to change them out.

The core charge is $35.00 Ya get back when you take in the bad one. And I have to tell ya these powerline axles are better than the CCT axles. That's probly why CCT went out of bussiness.
